How educated are you?

After hanging out in the TFP for some time, I've noticed that the vast majority of poeple here write very well and have rather intelligent things to say. It makes me wonder, just how educated is our community here? Vote now and put my wondering mind at ease. ;)

[edit] After seeing some of the responses, I realize that my options my not include everyone. If not, let us know your situtation... I had no idea there were so many different rules for art degrees and such. [/edit]

ARTelevision 08-10-2003 10:15 AM

The Master of Fine Arts that both sus and I have is the terminal degree in our field- no PhD in studio art. After an MFA, it's about being an artist, not studying art.

Silvy 08-10-2003 10:16 AM

I'm working on my Masters...

If anything I say sounds credible some of my education must be sticking... :)

bernadette 08-10-2003 11:09 AM

3 yrs of college (music)
then
3 yrs at a junior college (art)

and still no completed degree, so there was not a precise choice for me in the poll.

SecretMethod70 08-10-2003 11:16 AM

working on an undergrad degree in vocal performance (classical singing)

Plummie 08-10-2003 11:21 AM

Working on PhD in pharmacy.

I'm in for the long haul.

The_Dude 08-10-2003 12:30 PM

undergrad comp sci

skysooner 08-10-2003 03:49 PM

I actually receive my 2nd Master's degree this Thursday (MBA this time). I did a BS in Geology and a MS in Petroleum Engineering. I'm contemplating a doctorate, but I'm just not sure I want to work that hard, and it would basically be an ego thing. It wouldn't particularly help me with my job. Instead I might go back to school to learn Spanish or Russian for the fun of it.

napalm 08-10-2003 04:00 PM

Undergrad...Going into my Junior year working on Buisiness Administration/Management of Info Systems.

greytone 08-10-2003 04:15 PM

I clicked on PhD because my doctorate was not there. Technically a PhD is a little higher degree than an MD.

Slims 08-10-2003 04:41 PM

Senior applied math major here

Stiltzkin 08-10-2003 04:48 PM

Even moogles have to study. Working on a bachelor's degree in computer science (most moogles go for degrees in Kupology, but what do they know?).

Fibrosa 08-10-2003 04:56 PM

I gradumatatted from a foe yer uneyevarsatie.

spectre 08-10-2003 06:34 PM

One year away from an Associates in engineering, then going for a Bachelor's in comp. sci.

goddfather40 08-10-2003 08:44 PM

Bachelor's of Science, Electrical Engineering, March 2003, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

Thank you very much

Master of Science, Operations Research, November 2001, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

You're welcome. :)

OROIT 08-10-2003 10:03 PM

Finished high school and got straight into the workforce.
13 years of school was enough for me, hats of to those who continue their studies, you like pain huh :D
One guy i went to school with doesn't seem to know when to stop, hes been at university for 9 years!!

riskybiz 08-11-2003 02:13 AM

UCLA econ BA 1975. Almost 30 additional years of life experience subsequently including lots of ongoing professional training in my profession.

The day I took my last final exam at UCLA still ranks among the top 5 happiest days of my life.

fuzzix 08-11-2003 03:06 AM

6 Months until I (hopefully) graduate with a BAComm. Hell, I'd stay at uni forever if I could.

Insomniac(uk) 08-11-2003 03:18 AM

Writing up my PhD in chemistry, should be finished by mid September, then i can join the overeduated and unemployed masses (looking at a job in NY so fingers crossed {in the UK at the moment})

absorbentishe 08-11-2003 04:58 AM

BA in Management, considering going back for an MBA.

homerhop 08-11-2003 05:20 AM

Finished the American equivalent of high school, straight into a 4year apprenticeship. Qualified as a metal fabricator in 96.
Spent the last 3 years doing in-company training as a draughtsman.
But still class myself as very uneducated

I'm so glad to see an MD who is comfortable with that (my PhD is in education). Many times I've encountered people who hear that my name is Dr. So-and-So, and they ask what my specialty is. When I reply, "Education," they usually say, "Oh, I thought you were a REAL doctor."

My wife has to quickly spin me away before I can bash them over the head with several hundred years of accumulated Western education history.

cliche 08-11-2003 06:49 AM

Again, clicked on PhD because "real" ;) doctor wasn't there.
3yrs undergraduate in medicine and philosophy
3yrs undergraduate in clinical medicine

neoinoakleys 08-11-2003 07:32 AM

Finished my Bachelors in Biology, ended up in technology, and now working on a second bachelors in Science - business and E-business...

druptight 08-11-2003 03:18 PM

Currently in a program to earn 2 masters degrees in 15 months, my MBA and Masters in Accounting. Pretty stiff program... about 3 months down, 12 to go!

Undergrad was a BA in Economics with a minor in Mathematics.

crafty 08-11-2003 10:14 PM

I believe I'm very smart for an undergraduate, but I could be wrong.. Eventually a professor might tell me one way or another.

bundy 08-11-2003 10:34 PM

i´m doing my bachelors degree in international communications.
when thats done (in a year), its masters time.

IceMan81588 08-12-2003 12:18 AM

I actually just graduated a couple months ago from high school.

ditto for jD, and we sure don't have any delusions about wanting to be called doctor so-and-so. We prefer so-and-so, esquire!
But most respond to asshole, too.

MacGnG 08-12-2003 09:37 AM

i'm in 14th grade.

Fifteen Short 08-12-2003 10:06 PM

I started late :(

Now Im eighteen and going into senior year. I want to go through college and become either a teacher or something involving engineering. Both are strong points.

nothingx 08-13-2003 11:01 AM

I must say, this is fantasitc to see how many people have completed higher education degrees or are working toward them. To all those who have finished, especially those that have masters/phds/equivilants, congratulations! To those that are still working through school, I encourage you to keep working at it. I really believe that education is the key to a better future. Thanks to everyone that's participated.

PS. Wow! I can't believe there are "real" doctors trolling these boards! Awesome!

Charlatan 08-13-2003 11:31 AM

MDs are people too. I'm not one of them, but I've known enough of them behind the scenes.

BS Computer Science, 1987 for me. Tried going back for an MS but it didn't work out.

stinkynutz 08-13-2003 11:47 AM

ummm....currently trying to get a BS in biology. i might switch to biochem.

vermin 08-13-2003 04:39 PM

Got an A.S. in '87. Just recently got some info on getting a B.S. from the same school I got the A.S. (gotta see how the money thing works out).
Anything I know that is of any use to me I learned since then just livin' life and paying attention (reading a lot helps). I agree that the more education you have, the better off you will be.

Proof of this was a short argument I had with a 7th grade drop out who tried to convince me that "Ahh, you don't need to know how to read. I can read the road signs and that's good enough". If she hadn't been such a bitch I would have been tempted to weep (this was two years ago, she had 6 kids by age 24).

ktthequeen 08-13-2003 05:55 PM

I took one year at University but dropped out for a plethora of reasons (bad grades weren't one of them)

I might go back eventually, but seeing as I can hardly make rent, it's not gonna be soon.

Rodney 08-13-2003 06:15 PM

B.A. in journalism back in the '70s with a second major in political science. Currently enrolled in an accelerated master's program that will get me an MA in education and a California teaching credential by this time next year. It was time for a change.

Except for the accelerated pace, I'm finding school easier this time around than last time.

cetacean 08-13-2003 07:21 PM

I earned an MS in Biology last January... I am still contemplating a PhD, but a disertation seems like a rough trip after the hell I went through to produce a Master's Thesis...

yankeefatboy 08-13-2003 07:28 PM

So, yes, I am a rocket scientist.

When I was still in highschool I worked at this little pizza shop in town... one of the drivers I knew there had two degrees, one in areospace engineering and the other in marine engineering. It humored me to no end knowing a rocket scientist that delivered pizzas for a living. No, it wasn't because he couldn't find a 'real' job, he was just too lazy to look for one.

oldman2003 08-14-2003 01:32 PM

After 35 years off...I am going to go back to school this winter! Just maybe I'll get that piece of paper that qualifies me for the job I've been doing the past 10 yrs.

juanvaldes 08-14-2003 03:14 PM

Semi-Normal 08-14-2003 07:13 PM

I guess I count as undergrad. I did a year and a half before I decided I just wasn't enjoying the study enough and withdrew. Been working since then. No plans to resume my studies at this point, though it may happen one day.

Bachelor's of Science in Business Management with strong minors of Psychology and Economics. I spent a lot of time switching majors so I had all of the major credits for both Psych and Econ. Weird combo, but what's a stupid kid supposed to do?

B.S. Mechanical Engineering UT-Austin '96

My friends are fond of Bullshit instead Bachelor of Science because I graduated first of out of our group in three and half years. And I was "the" slacker all through high school.

For those with Master or higher degrees. Does it help in your field and among your peers? I've thought about going back to school and completing my masters but it seems I'd be overqualified for the jobs I prefer and unexperienced enough for the jobs that really require a Master degree.

Clewd 08-15-2003 01:14 AM

undergrad in engineering, havent declared a major yet, probably comp. sci. or bioE

Undergrad electric engineering here.

sailor 11-05-2003 12:20 PM

In college at the moment. I would like to get a Masters, and if I decide to major Economics, a PhD as well.

There had better be a good community college wherever I end up after school, too. There are so many random things I want to learn. I could seriously get 10 different degrees just out of curiosity. So much to learn, so little time...

tontoom 11-05-2003 01:07 PM

I am at college.

Drinking beer and having fun. Soon I am going to pass the exams also.

oberon 11-05-2003 01:31 PM

I am currently a senior in computer engineering at Purdue University. Hope to finish my B.S. in December 2004.

After that, I think I'll try for an M.S. Maybe after I've finished an M.S. thesis, I'll try for a PhD.. maybe. Not sure I want to do computer engineering research for a living...

Im an 18 year old second year looking at a BS in Computer Science (yeah, me and half of everyone else in college now has that damn major... and I wonder why theres no jobs :( )

However, At least I can make light of it, thanks to my mom*'s father.

Quote:

BS = Bullshit
MS = More Shit
PhD = Piled Head Deep
NOTE: this man has a PhD in Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Theory from MIT... Coolest "old guy" ever!

* mom meaning dad's g/f of 5 years.. yeah, shes basically my mom.

irseg 11-06-2003 12:02 AM

I dropped out of college (was pursuing a BS in computer science), and it was the best damn decision I ever made.

Anyone who says college is better than the "real world" is full of shit. Outside of college, the work you do actually has significance. It can affect whether a company lives or dies, and whether you can afford to eat and pay your bills. A wee bit more significant than a grade from some TA and a letter on a transcript. Oh, and you don't have to live in a 10x10 concrete box with someone else, either. That's certainly a plus.

splck 11-06-2003 06:29 AM

There's no "dropped out of high school"...not that I did.

spived2 11-08-2003 11:43 AM

I graduated High school and now I'm trying to take college classes between deployments. Hopefully I can get my associates while still in the army (Free!)

Fallon 11-08-2003 01:29 PM

I'm working on a B.S in Network Engineering and I might work on a concentration in Information Security. I'm also thinking about trying to get another degree in some other computer related field at school.
My fiancee on the other hand, she's majoring in Aquaculture and Fishery Technologies with a dual minor in Animal and Vetrinary Sciences and Computer Science. She is definately going to have to get a masters in whatever animal field she says if not a PhD.
So between the two of us, we'll probably have 3-6 degrees.

Sensei 11-09-2003 02:40 PM

Wow, I noticed there were very smart people on the good ol TFP but had no idea we were so educated. We rock :) I'm due to graduate in May 2004 with a BA in Economics and Political Science.
