Stay out of NY City!

NEW YORK (AP) -- The black car hit her first, striking Natalie Guzman as she tried to cross a Queens street to buy a bag of potato chips. The 18-year-old managed to get to her feet before she was hit again, by a white car.

About four minutes later, her friends dove for cover as a black sport utility vehicle hurtled through the 30 mph zone at an estimated 80 mph. Guzman, who could not move, was killed instantly.

Police searched for the three hit-and-run drivers Wednesday in the kind of crime that tends to reinforce New Yorkers' reputation as a cold-hearted lot.

City Councilman Eric Gioia said the case reminded him of that of Kitty Genovese, who was killed on a Queens street in 1964 while dozens of people watched from their windows and did nothing.

"It shocks the conscience that three separate people would be so callous as to mow someone down and just keep on going," Gioia said.

Guzman's family contended that she was intentionally killed, saying she had feared for her life since a bar fight two weeks earlier.

"The family thinks her death may have something to do with that fight," said neighbor Olimpia Urena, who acted as a translator for Guzman's mother and aunt. The family came from the Dominican Republic.

Police said only that they are still investigating all possibilities and looking into whether the drivers even knew they had hit someone.

Guzman's life ended Sunday morning, shortly after she left Los Primos Tournament Billiards on Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, Queens, a heavily Hispanic neighborhood about two blocks from the one-bedroom apartment she shared with her 15-month-old daughter, Laritza, and her mother, Miriam Toribio. This stretch of Roosevelt Avenue is home to several bars and social clubs.

Urena said Guzman dropped out of high school after becoming pregnant but had recently decided to get her life back on track.

"She said she wanted to make her life normal, she wanted to do something with her life," Urena said. "She was studying to get her GED and after that, she planned to go to LaGuardia Community College."

Guzman even had a job interview to sell cosmetics lined up this week, Urena added.

"She was a very friendly girl, very helpful," Urena said. "If she saw me with my shopping bags, she would always help me. She didn't deserve what happened to her."

A witness told police that Guzman had left the pool hall to go to a bodega across the street.

The first car, traveling at about 60 to 70 mph, struck Guzman as she attempted to cross the two-lane street, which runs underneath the elevated subway tracks and has cars parked along the sides of the road, the witness said.

The second car was also going about 60 to 70 mph, the witness said.

As Guzman lay in the street, her friends discovered her and tried to help. They told police they believed she was still breathing. Then the SUV came barreling toward them.

Urena said Guzman's family finds it hard to believe that three people could run over her, and none of them would stop.

I don't know about you but it just seem fishy for the girl to be hit once and then hit again...Makes you want to move to NY City eh!? Not!!!

I read this a while ago, makes me sad to be a human.

Whenever I hit anything in my car that I didnt see, I stop and check.

If I did see it, and it was (is?) alive, I stop and check.

Hit and run drivers are among the worst people in existence.

Bill O'Rights 01-22-2004 08:53 AM

Let's see now...30mph zone...hit by not one, but two cars traveling between 60-70mph...and finally finished off by an SUV going 80mph. Fishy doesn't even begin to describe this.

Either it was an intentional "hit", or the NYPD needs to monitor that stretch of road a little more closely. As I recall from driving in Brooklyn, a few years ago, it's kinda hard to even get to 30mph while driving under those elevated tracks.

Well, I live in New York City, and this is a really sad event, but it does NOT reflect everyday life in the city, nor does it reflect the average New Yorker's attitude.

I'm really saddened by this tragedy, but also pissed off at the following:

The 2003 blackout should have proved that thats not the case...

This death seems extremely suspicious - three cars in a row, all speeding dangerously, all hit and run... I don't know, but this does not seem like your normal accident. It seems like a calculated, planned, and well-executed murder. *shrug*

Cynthetiq 01-22-2004 09:16 AM

Having lived on Queens Blvd, known as the Boulevard of Death, I never crossed the street. I'd watch people get munched there all the time.

It's dangerous in that area. There are several places in NYC that are dangerous like that, and those that live in those neighborhoods know just how dangerous it is, or they don't get to cross the street very often.

krwlz 01-22-2004 09:32 AM

Ive said it before and Ill say it again... Shit like this makes my faith in humanity plummet.

Why would I want to help people in world where this happens?

G_Whiz 01-22-2004 09:33 AM

I don't live in NYC, but I don't think you can blame it on the city. I have heard similar stories here in California.

Remember, that idiots can live anywhere. There are just more journalists to report about them in NYC.

gilada 01-22-2004 09:48 AM

If it's such a bad speed zone, the cops should be monitoring it. If nothing else, it's money in the bank for them.

moonstrucksoul 01-22-2004 10:06 AM

that is a sad strange story.

i once saw a show on Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, and this one guy had to stop like every block to make sure that he hadn't hit something with his car. he was really bad.

Phaenx 01-22-2004 10:28 AM

Why have you forsaken us, Superman?

SaltPork 01-22-2004 10:59 AM

It was a hit, pure and simple.

Calculated, planned, and well-executed murder? You would think that if this was murder, they would assume the woman would be dead after the first car. I don't think this was planned. Just a bizarre sequence of events.

I know not all NYers are bad ppl, but for many their attitude even follows them wherever they go

We have an abundance of New Yorkers come down here to Florida for some reason. I guess because it gets crowded and they want to get away frm the cold. But the problem is many bring the infamous NYC attitude with them. They're loud, they're careless drivers, they're inconsiderate. All the things NYC is infamous for, they do. Sure, other people come from other states and they're morons but NY has the highest relocation rate to Florida.

Article about NY relocation to FL:

http://www.bizjournals.com/southflor...4/daily29.html

From what experience I've had personally with these transplants and heard from numerous others I don't doubt for one second that people get mowed down there regularly, and my theory is where human life is overly abundant it's worth less to members of society. They're reviled here because they carry over those traits here.

Yes, everybody stay out of New York City, or you will get run over! Mark my words! And look both ways!

bernadette 01-22-2004 02:26 PM

gah. sounds like intentional murder to me.

not knowing new york, it sounds like she lived in a rough area & hung out in rough places with rough people...
wonder what the fight was about?

chrisg299 01-22-2004 03:13 PM

crazy world we live in sometimes :-/

forseti-6 01-22-2004 06:08 PM

Please, that was Queens. Everyone knows Manhattan is the only borough that counts :D. *waits for flames*

thejoker130 01-22-2004 06:26 PM

*Sigh* When i was in NY I saw some crazy shit.
The one instance i can remember off the top of my head was a stretch Hummer cutting off a crosstown bus in rush hour trafic and almost ramming an ambulance that had it's lights and siren going...

Strange city....

cait987 01-22-2004 06:37 PM

I live in Las Vegas and I can tell you some crazy shit happens and people get in some car accidents that make you go wtf?

A few weeks ago I remember going through a intersection and there was a huge traffic jam .. somehow a guy was going backwards in a forward lane and then the other guy was going sideways and hit the guy going backwards.

The thing is both of them didnt spin much and were really going that way .. Alchohal + lights + cars = bad city ><

And back to the story ... Ive seen crazy shit happen but the odds of them not stopping if they hit someone that hard are slim I mean when you hit a rock you can feel a huge bump but hitting a person? that would be one hell of a bump and a pretty damn big dent.

so I say a hit and run ..

World's King 01-22-2004 06:38 PM

Isn't staying out of New York City a good rule for general life?

onodrim 01-22-2004 09:40 PM

Wow, what a sad story. For three different cars to all hit her and have none of them stop just seems way to bizarre to be purely accidental, although anything is possible I suppose.
/me is gonna remember to look twice before crossing the street again.

PorscheBunny 01-23-2004 12:17 AM

Isn't there a sign at once entrance to Queens that says "Welcome to Queens, Now Go Home!" ?

Sounds like a murder, not three accidents.

Did anyone shoot any of the hit-and-run cars? What happened to New Yorkers being armed to the teeth?

Plan9Senior 01-23-2004 12:48 AM

NY is good.... for me to poop on

tenchi069 01-23-2004 03:08 AM

I helped a friend of mine move to Brooklyn. During the 2 1/2 days I was actually in the city and just outside I found that the polar opposite of the cold-hearted stereo type to be true. Everyone I interacted with, without exception, went out of their way to help us. I had never ridden on a subway before and when it took off and I wasn't yet seated I almost fell on this one woman. Fortunately my friend caught me, and after excusing myself to the woman, she politely made conversation and tried to make me not feel so bad about it. Then while on the same ride, a woman got off the train and forgot her purse, 2 guys held the doors open ( to prevent the train from moving, and 1 guy bolted out the door to give the woman her purse back and jumped back on the train. The movers my friend hired not only finished the job, but when they heard I needed to go to Manhattan to the bus terminal they offered us a ride there in their van so we didnt have to wait on the subway. There was a locksmith that had to help us get the keys out of our vehicle, and when we asked where the nearest gas station was, rather than just telling us, offered to lead us there, even though it was out of the way. That is just a few of many, many interactions I had with New York and it's residents and every single one of them was a great experience.

mystix 01-23-2004 06:28 AM

i've seen 90's in a 15 mph zone, but this is baad.

Dano069 01-23-2004 09:09 AM

It's not only NY. This happened in the Chicagoland area this week. It also appears to be a "hit" The girl was hit twice by the same car, no lights on. She had been threatened before this happened. She was only 18.

ratbastid 01-23-2004 09:16 AM

I've never been to NY, but I want to go there! I guess I just need a map of which intersections to stay the hell away from.

New York is one of the best gun-free utopias in the United States.

I go to school with a bunch of kids from New York, and they're all assholes.
