Texas Teenagers Arrange Street Fight on Internet
Wed May 12, 2004 04:32 PM ET

DALLAS (Reuters) - Teenage street fighting entered the digital age in a Dallas suburb where 33 people have been arrested for slugging it out in a massive melee arranged on the Internet and videotaped by participants, police said on Wednesday.

Police in Garland said several people were injured in the fight and those arrested included 27 high school students. Police were able to make arrests in this case earlier this week after reviewing a videotape of the brawl.

The date and time of the meeting of rivals from two high schools' car clubs had been arranged over the Internet, said Joe Harn, an officer with the Garland police department.

Harn said that as a police gangs unit investigated the case, the group discovered the Internet communication and the existence of videotapes.

The fight took place on March 3 and a videotape of the event shows numerous people coming to blows in the street while onlookers cheered.

Those arrested could face between two to 20 years in jail if convicted of second-degree felony relating to the fight.

"It is much more high-tech in the way they communicate," Harn said, "but when it comes to fighting, it is still the same old thing."

“For the most part, it’s nothing but cursing on it. Some of them actually signed in with their true names, so that helped us identify people,” Harn said.
it doesn't get any easier.

It is relatively common for gangs to use the Internet to threaten and challenge rivals, said Jared Lewis, director of Know Gangs, a Wisconsin-based organization that educates police and the public about gangs.

“This is the first time I’ve heard where you’ve had a fight result, where the gangs actually met,” Lewis said. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that it’s happened. It’s just the scale that does surprise me.”

Lewis said that increased use of the Internet by gangs is fueled in part by chat rooms and bulletin boards on gangsta rap artists’ Web sites.
i want to say that this just an excuse to blame rap. but i won't.

I immediately thought of West Side Story as well.

I saw this on the news today. They seemed surprised that kids would use the internet to arrange things like this. The internet has changed the way we do everything in life, even if it is arranging a fight.

It's kind of funny. This story seems to be some wacked out personality test. Like a new Rorschach test...

I think I've found a doctors thesis.

I said it bofore, i'll say it again. I should have been born on Vulcan. With the advance of technology, we as humans find the most illogical manner in which to apply it. Sad but true.

Funny how the internet has become just an extention of our culture an lives for so many of us who use it daily.

Those that don't use it will be left behind fairly quickly.

With all the ability that we now have to communicate with other countries and cultures it's a shame that they couldn't use this to understand each other and work together better. Guess our ego will always rule many of us and drive us to do stupid things like this. Technology or not you can't change what's inside.

It always starts so innocent, a dance competition where somebody gets served. Then they have to server the orginial dancers back and then it's on. The product of it being on is usually a coach in the hospital and fighting like this.

Someone passed me this quote on the matter today, but sadly not its attribution.
