Model Warship Combat!

Did you ever build a model warship and try to launch it in your bathtub? Did you ever build a working model warship complete with BB guns turrets and fight them on a pond?

Of course you haven't -but you might have thought about it... Apparently so did a vast number of others... I bring you Remote Controlled Model Warship Combat!

A number of clubs (around the world) have taken this up... Here are some pictures from Queensland:

Here's a list of rules and other fun stoppers here:

I've heard of this before. It's good stuff. Wish I could seem them do it.

Key point: they recover the models after they're sunk.

The ultimate in geekery! It's an awesome concept, but how exactly does one sink a ship (or start a fire) with just BB's?

From the given link:
Quote:

The Club’s rules of construction require that each model ship have soft penetrable sides made of thin balsa wood, which extend at least 85% of the ship’s length. If the model is struck by a BB at or below the waterline by a nearby model, the wooden skin will be punctured allowing water to seep in.
which answers my own question as well ;)

Edit: though no mention is made of any fires... But from the pictures it looks like it is not the ship that is on fire, but a prop.

And I though I needed a girlfriend.

emmdubbs 05-31-2004 12:56 PM

a trend i could get into...if i had the money...and patience

Astrocloud 05-31-2004 12:59 PM

I think the fire was not on a ship but rather a dramatic effect of shooting base long and hard enough. Here is a close up of a base:

I want my very own Yamato battleship.

stevie667 06-01-2004 05:17 AM

*goes off to build a dreadnaught*

sweet, in a geeky sorta way.

ARTelevision 06-01-2004 06:18 AM

It a real cool hobby...

We got ponds and plans to head over to the RC shop soon.

Thanks!

Cynthetiq 06-01-2004 06:48 AM

nice... i remember a guy in LA who used to have a carrier with a RC copter on it.. that was reallly neat.

:) very cool pics.

DelayedReaction 06-01-2004 06:56 AM

Can I field an orbital bombardment?

Cool hobby.

Fallon 06-01-2004 07:00 AM

I wish I had lots of money because this is freakin cool.
It looks like it costs at least 500 to start one.

if only one could get said chopper to be large enough (but to scale with the ships) to carry armament and have anti-aircraft weaponry on the ships

oh the glorious scenarios that could be made if you scaled the ships up large enough and you had enough room to make them work....oh wait, that's what the navy is :o

denim 06-01-2004 07:13 AM

Yeah, this is all Navy geeks, I guess. I wonder what real Navy people think of it.

wubbawubba 06-01-2004 11:46 AM

That is too cool.
I mean, it's not actually cool...
but I wanna do it!

absorbentishe 06-01-2004 01:21 PM

That looks too fun. Expensive but fun. I might just try my hand at building one... As an experiment that is.

Captain Canada 06-01-2004 07:52 PM

Coolest thing EVAR!!!! That looks so geeky, yet so cool.

Esco 06-01-2004 08:09 PM

Man ... I would love to fool around with something like that. All men love toys.

Gortexfogg 06-02-2004 07:20 PM

Awesome stuff. Though, I'd never be able to do it. I couldn't stand to loose something I'd put so much work into.

denim 06-02-2004 07:28 PM

That's why you recover it if it sinks.

Ripp3r 06-03-2004 01:35 AM

Miniature warfare is a fun concept, however I do think that targeting the cannons might be a real bitch to do properly.

I wonder if they do the same thing with Land based vehicels ... tanks with bb's and jeeps and stuff ... might be cool to think up strategies and scenarios :)

replay the war scenarios with RC tanks and ships :)

bermuDa 06-03-2004 02:10 AM

they need to be bigger... and where are the aircraft carriers? we need to incorporate RC planes into the fray!!! :D
