Pop or Soda
I live in Minnesota and have always called it pop. When I went to Wisconsin for school, everyone calls it soda. I know it is called both by different people and by other names by some. I was wondering what you call it. Also, where are you from because it seems to be a local thing. If you call it somthing else, what do you call it?
|
I don't know anyone in Canada that calls it soda (unless they are ex-pat Americans).
We call it pop. |
It's much easier to just ask for a beer, it's the same in any language, midwestern, southern, yankee... tastes better too.
|
Here in NC we call it "drink" or "soft drink." I used to call it pop when I was like 6. I've never called it soda and probably never will. All of my northerner friends call it soda, though.

|
I call it "Liquid Death" because of the 9 tablespoons of sugar that are in a can of Coke.

i dont drink "soda" but i do drink beer. |
Call it soda here, but when I go to Minnesota to visit family, have to switch into "pop" mode. I hear pop and think of popsicle.
|
For the folks that call it Pop -- is the sugar free version, diet pop? (that just sounds strange to me) Diet Soda sounds more normal.
|
how is diet pop strange sounding?
|
I never call it diet pop, I usualy just call it diet, or ask for a specific diet.
|
I hate when people call it pop. It's not pop it is soda!
|
In the South, it's all Coke. Even if it's Pepsi, it's still Coke.
|
"dricka". ;)
|
I use it interchangeably. Some times pop, other times soda, other times drink. Or I'll just say "Can I get a ____ (name of drink)"
Seriously though, what's this big controversy about it? |
It's soda...always was, always will be.
|
Being from Ohio, it was always "pop," but since I've lived elsewhere, I started calling it soda for whatever reason.
My mom said the next time I ask for a soda, though, she's going to hand me a box of baking soda  |
It's SODA! *walks away*

Its pop. Soda sounds rather...not like pop. :)

Of course, I don't drinks cokes anymore, so it's not like I care much nowadays. |
Come on, everybody knows it's sodapop.
Just like the word taxicab. |
|
coke.. but a lot of times i will just call it what it actually is, "hey, care to get me a mountain dew while you're up?"
|
Used to call it coke all the time. Couldn't figure out why everybody would get confused.
Now it's soda. |
In Wisconsin we all called it soda..now that I live in the north west everyone calls it pop.
|
IT'S SODA!!! READ THE LABEL ON ANY STORE IN ANY STATE!!! IT WILL SAY SODA! No seriously if you look at a label or reciept it will say soda. Proves soda is right...
|
Soda or Pop works.
Coke however, does not work. It's a brand name damnit. |
This is one of THE things that pisses me off more than any other in Ohio. I hate it when people call it "Pop." Its not pop, pop is a fucking verb, not a noun. It's soda.

WI seems to be a transitional state for dialects. I hear people with no accent, a Chi-caaaaaaah-go accent, and the full-blown northerners who sound like the people in "Fargo". |
Wow, I never realized so many people called it pop. I live in St. Louis and lo and behold, just about everywhere around St. Louis county calls it soda. I went to Cincinatti over the weekend and I had to do doubletakes everytime somebody asked me if I wanted pop at a restaurant. Crazy...
|
that map thing is cool but I think we have more ppl in oregon that say soda then what the map shows.

Down here in the south everthing is coke
|
Pop here in Toledo!
|
I, like a few others I see, have always called it soda. Doesn't matter what flavor...
I guess "What kinda pop do you have?" just doesn't sound right because of my upstate New York upbringing... |
Going to school outside of Boston, they were really bizarre - to the best of my knowledge Tonic was a Soda, Soda referred to Club Soda only. (I never could quite figure out what you got if you ordered a Gin and Tonic) But what do you expect from an area that doesnt put ice cream in a milk shake.
|
Coke...
First you specify that you want a "coke" and then the question is asked "what kind?" and you reply with the specifics. Down south it's all about brand names. |
Pop in colorado. Pop also in Washington state. For some reason, I hear soda and think of a fountain drink.
|
Quote:
Coke works fine down here bro. Its kinda like Kleenex. It doesnt mater if its a Kleenex brand or a Puffs or some generic brand its still a Kleenex. |
It's pop. Also it's splinter not sliver.

Here in MD (right by DC) we use soda and coke pretty interchangably, although we also go by brand name since UMD is a Pepsi campus. I prefer Coke, because when I want a cola I want a bloody Coke. |
Location: NW PA, USA
Word: Pop, Drink Funny thing is I also use Pop to talk to my father, I dont use dad, father, etc.. just Pop/Pops |
Soda is the way it should be... also, here in Wisconsin, we say "Water Fountain" whereas other, less cultured :D , regions say bubbler, referring to the thing that spouts water out so you can drink it...
|
what a great thread. when i used to live in new york we would have this discussion all the time. i grew up calling it pop. when i first moved to ny and ordered a pop, people would look at me like i was speaking a different language. strange.
in ny i worked with a guy from pennsylvania who told me that half the state calls it pop and the other half soda. he went on to tell me that there was some sort of charity sporting event ( i think basketball) that had the sodas vs the pops. anyone ever heard of this? |
I'm from north carolina, so I call it soda
|
I always just say: Can I get a coke pleaaaaassseee?
Sometimes I say soda, but never pop. |
Some of you people need to relax and calm down. This isn't a life or death thing, now.
Whatever happened to "soda pop?" Or how about "soft drink?" It is simple- when asked what I want to drink, I ask if the restaurant peddles coke products, or pepsi products. If they answer coke, I tell them I want a diet coke. If they answer pepsi, I ask for the crab juice. If I am running into the gas station, I will usually ask the person with me if they want a pop. If I am referring to the drink in a passive voice, I use soda. Sometimes, I use soda pop. |
Soda. I'm from the northeast USA.

pop! (south dakota) The midwest all refer to it as pop.
Coke is a brandname. Nothing pisses me off more when I ask for a Coke and they bring me a Pepsi. |
South Florida is definitely "soda" territory, and that's the word that I use.
|
Soda Pop..;)
|
As has been mentioned, soda here in New York
|
kepage- You read my mind- I thought about starting a thread like this just yesterday!
Soda is ahead, and I just made it more ahead. I like using the old fashion/english verions- soda, colour, favour, etc. |
I live in Dallas and I call it coke. Usually though, we just use the real name of the drink, but when referring to carbonated beverages as a collective, we use coke. I hate Coca-Cola too.
My relatives from Wisconsin either call it soda, pop or soda-pop. All of those drive me insane, especially soda-pop. The real question is: how many of you drink the best drink ever, Dr Pepper. It seems to be a South thing as well and the restaruants that serve it grow scarce as you travel northward - try it out sometime. My mom even used to hate it when she lived in Indiana, but after moving to Dallas, she began to love it for some reason. Hmmmm... |
[x] Don't care.
The item has multiple names, fascinating. I honestly thought people would have gotten over this by now. *grumpy* |

I call it by the name of the product. Coke=coke and Pepsi=pepsi.
|
It's called "pop" in Canada and "soda" would be soda water like when you ask for a vodka soda or vodka tonic.
It will always be POP for me. |

man, elfuq kind of just did away with this whole thread. :-) that's a pretty interesting map though. i'd like to see more like that displaying other regional differences.
|
I'm from Wisconsin. I used to call it pop all the time. When I waitressed at a truck stop I got so many comments about my term for it that I eventually changed what I called it. It stuck somewhat. I find myself morphing back into my old habit of calling it pop. I actually like the word pop - just has a ring to it. Maybe I like it because it's what I used to call it as a kid. Like that sound when you pulled the metal cap off "POP!"
|

I use to call it Soda when I grew up overseas, then when I went to college in IN, it was called pop, and then I moved to NC, and they call it Coke, but I still call it pop. :D |
From NJ here and we call it soda. Calling it coke is just confusing in most cases, but i use it sometimes too. When i refer to a coke im refering to either coca-cola or pepsi though. I find it annoying when i order a "coke" and get back "what kind". It pissed me off, though, when i ask for a "coke" and they say "we dont have coke". I always end up asking "ok, what else do you have", the reply always being something like "well, we have pepsi, diet pepsi, etc etc". To me pepsi and coke are the same damn thing - cola. People look at you even more strangely if you order a cola though.
The coke-pepsi things gets really old really fast. The taste isnt really noticable at all if you dont pay attention to it. Not anything like the difference between regular and diet. Diet cola tastes like rancid ass to me. |
I hate both the words pop and soda! I used to work friday nights in a petrol station and would get drunks asking me for a "gottle of gop" etc at 3AM. Trying to prise from them which of the many brands of soft drink we sold they actually wanted was a nightmare!
"Just gimme some pop man, why you givin me all is assle over some op? Just a can of fizzy. You hear me?!" I loved my job... ;) |
I'm with cowudders, but for different reasons. I usually go with coke, or maybe the specific brand name - but the very sound of "pop" or "soda" makes bile rise in my throat. Akin to seeing old men from Ohio and PA, in pleather sandals with black socks pulled up to their mid-thighs with khacky shorts, running around the beach with metal detectors. icky.
|
In my experience the map shows Kentucky about right. I'm from Northeastern KY and it always been pop, but since I moved to Louisville everyone calls it Coke. Pop is definitely better.
|
i've always went by pop but my wife called it cola for any soda type beverage.
|
I live in MD and we generally indicate we want coke when wanting soda.
|
Carbonated flavoured beverages seem to be called pop in Canada and carbonated water seems to be called soda here. I had not heard the word soda to refer to a flavoured carbonated beverage until I visited the United States.
|
in texas i think we just call everything coke
well not everything, but all sodas.... i dunno why *shrug* my dad calls them soda waters, but i usually ask "hey, anyone want a coke?" and then i ask "ok what kind?" people tease me about it |
its called 'Soft Drink' all around Australia.
no one ever calls it Soda, unless its Soda Water (which is sparkling mineral water a la Perrier). no one ever calls it pop, ever. and coke is just coke, unless of course its coke. |
I love the odd looks I get when I travel and ask for a pop!
|
THat map is cool. I'm so fasinated by stuff like that.
Arizona is not a "soda" state, atleast central Arizona, BTW, it's COKE, ok? |
Coke in SC.
When the restaurant offers Pepsi only, sometimes they say "Is Pepsi OK?" Sometimes they don't even bother. |
Only people from far away places call it soda around here.
Everybody knows it's pop. |
I grew up in California, and we all called it Soda. Then i moved to Oregon, where they all call it Pop. Stupid gits.
|
Soda.
But then, I'm originaly from Pennsylvania. |
I'm from Kansas and it's pop there. I live in OKC now, but I still say pop. Some ppl give me shit about it, but a well said "fuck you" usually takes care of that.
What I want to know is- WTF is Mr Pibb?? I love Dr. Pepper and that lame ass Mr. Pibb is NO substitute! I was surprised to read above that Dr. Pepper is not as popular up north. They're really missing out. But is Mr. Pibb popular ANYWHERE? I know you can't get a Dr. P in South America. All the places I've been to down there had never even heard of it. I was really jonesin' by the time I came back. |

The south was the home of Coca-Cola and I have to admit, I have called it a Coke for most of my life.
Wouldn't you like to hire the marketing whiz that got that to catch on? Not much different than calling a copy a "Xerox" up until a few years back. |
soda sounds like something from the 50's.
|
Quote:
Anyway, I wonder if it's a coincidence that people in the south say coke and the Coca-Cola headquarters just happen to be in Georgia. |
Quote:
just plain silly to use 'pop' rather than 'soda' (even though the previously mentioned term 'liquid death' or 'tooth destroyer' would be more accurate). |
The only way to clear this up is for everyone to quit asking for a pop or soda or cola..... ( Cola..... don't get me started on that one.)......... and go their own.
But, mostly I say Pop. |
in england, we just call it a fizzy drink....no one really says pop or soda...
|
I'm from Sw virginia and I've always called it soda or soft drink
|
