Faith in humanity rising ... rising ... rising

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...7/s1161151.htm

Quote:
An anonymous benefactor has sent a winning lottery ticket worth 200 million yen ($A[merican]2,600,000) to a local government in central Japan to help disaster victims of heavy rain, the local governor said.

The ticket, confirmed by authorities to be a real winner, came with a letter from the nameless donor.

"If this can help even a little those who have met with unhappiness and disaster, I would be very happy," the writer said in the letter.

Three people died and two were missing in Fukui after floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains over Japan's northern coastal areas since mid-July.

At the peak of the rain damage, some 9,141 people had to flee their homes in Fukui, an official said.

Fukui intends to put the funds toward disaster relief and will not go further to try to identify the sender, a spokeswoman said.
Just when you start to wonder if there are really good people left in the world ...

I really don't know if I'd be generous enough to do that, although I'd probably be a bit more generous than usual if my town was flooded and destroyed.

What's that, about 1.2 mil USD?

Wow, very nice. I wonder if they person that sent it even needed it themselves?

The person either didn't actually need and bought it for the purpose of philanthropy, should they win, or is nuts! I prefer to think it's the former, not the latter.
I always felt if I had won large, I would give a great deal of it to World Wildlife Fund. Friends thought I was nuts when I gave my entire state tax refund to Green Peace many years ago.....

This is a smart thing to do.

There are many documented stories of lottery winners whose lives are miserable after winning. Just about half of lottery winners report no increase in personal happiness after winning.

fuck happiness, i' ll take the security of my underground fortress of solitude, and a couple of tanks in my garage.

that person did a great thing. that's what you might call a "ticket to heaven."

haha, ticket to heaven..good one

seriously, though, that is amazing and I wish i could say i'd do something like that, but i'm not sure i could...

and yeah, Art, most people report no happiness change afterwards. A lot of people are worse off after they squander away the money. As one friend of mine put it, they don't really know how to handle that much, so it's like a big shopping spree without taking into account the realities of taxes and the hidden fees of having/spending that much money. The ones that take the lumpsum generally are worse off than the ones that take the 20 yr payments...
