Target of the Tabloids
Everytime I'm at the grocery store I see the stupid tabloid magazines, with all kinds of ridiculous stories and pictures and all that garbage... I'm not talking about "the enquirer" or that stuff, more about the magazines trashing people like Britney Spears or some other flavour of the month...
I don't understand why the paparazzi pick on people, like say Britney Spears or whomever. In a way it makes me feel sorry for them. I mean, why do we get so wrapped up, why do we care so much about what happens to Britney? Why do we rejoice so much in these articles and stories that really only tell us that she is just like every one else, that she's human, that she has failures and shortcomings? Why is it okay for the media to treat them like absolute crap??? What if the media just picked a different person every day, and took pictures of them when they got up in the morning, and followed them around all day, and dug up all the dirty secrets and mistakes of the past and flaunted them for the world to see? Wouldn't that upset you if it happened? It would really hurt me. I think we've gone too far with our idolization of 'celebrities'. We're clearly obessed as a society. And so, I wonder... I wonder if it's even slightly possible that Britney Spears will read this, and maybe, just maybe she'll want to meet me and thank me, and maybe I'll get to have sex with her.... |

Fact is WheatKing, so long as there is a market for something there will be someone there to produce it. No matter how offensive or annoying it may be to you and me, people love to read this shit
It's really a shame that people like Spears and Cameron Diaz and whoever else you want to name get abused so horribly like this it's unfair and wrong. The otherside of the argument is that since they put themselves in the public eye they "asked for it." While that may be true in a couple of extreme cases (not naming names) for the most part these people are just people like you and me, who happen to have cooler jobs. My philosphy on all this, just ignore it and for godsake do not take part in it. Don't buy the magazines and even more, do not take part in the many Britney-bashing threads here or otherplaces.

Why is there a market for it? Schadenfreude.
Why celebrities? Because the media have made our village much bigger. If there was no media and you only knew the people in your town, people would be sniping about the popular/beautiful/powerful local people. Same thing, bigger scale. None of this makes it excusable, however. |
