Enormous Environmental Study Concludes

And the verdict is: pretty much screwed.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4391835.stm

Quote:
The most comprehensive survey ever into the state of the planet concludes that human activities threaten the Earth's ability to sustain future generations.

The report says the way society obtains its resources has caused irreversible changes that are degrading the natural processes that support life on Earth.

This will compromise efforts to address hunger, poverty and improve healthcare.

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment was drawn up by 1,300 researchers from 95 nations over a period of four years.

This report is essentially an audit of nature's economy, and the audit shows we've driven most of the accounts into the red

Jonathan Lash, World Resources Institute
It reports that humans have changed most ecosystems beyond recognition in a dramatically short space of time.
The quote is just the intro to this article. It's not hugely long, and definitely worth a read in my opinion. I can't say it surprises me, but definitely instills a little bit of fear.

its really to bad that we, supposedly the smartest of earths inhabitants, can't clean up our own messes. even my nephew's pet gerbal knows not to shit where it sleeps.

everything nowadays is to politically minded to make a move in the right direction. we refuse to impliment change in our own lives, at the expense of the rest of the world, and future generations.

the one issue that the entire world should be concerned about, is the one issue nobody's willing to discuss with one another. we've gotten good at identifying the problems, but rather lax in the department of acting upon them..

so sadly.. i don't see this study doing any good.
i was under the impression that it was already common knowledge that we as a species have had a drastic and irreversable effect on the planet. i hope they gathered more information as to how this has happend, and not just that it has.

I have to applaude the bbc for doing by far the best job in covering environmental issues in the media. I hope their efforts to raise awarness are not in vein. This is tremendously important to every living being on the planet. I pray to God that our posterity doesn't have to deal with our awful mistakes and apathy.

Believe it or not......this topic is by far the largest worry on my mind, day to day.
Wars end, compassion for others can be learned, political errors will be corrected in the long run.

By there has to actually BE a long run.......
