You know what they say about men who carry their wallets in their front pockets.

Or, at least, I was hope you do, cuz I haven't a clue.

In Birds of Prey, Huntress has used this phrase twice when talking to a man. The first time is in #57. Helena has just caught a kidnapper, has him hanging upside down and is interrogating him.

The second time is in the newest issue, #84. She's talking to Dick (Nightwing), a friend and ally of hers, and remarks that she didn't think of him as the type of guy who carries his wallet in his front pocket.

At Gail Simone's forum, she's been asked point blank what it means several times, and she just teases us, though she did say it isn't a small penis joke, and implied that it's a slang term girls use about guys. This means I'm supposed to know it. I am, however at a disadvangage as I have no close female friends, and those I do have don't tend to talk about guys. The guys at my comic book group have no clue.

So I'm going back over to the convention now, and I expect an answer when I reemerge Which might not be for eight or ten hours.

i'm going with that they don't wantto get pickpocketed... since most men carry their wallets in the back pockets, it makes it a lot easier to pick pocket them... by carrying it in the front... makes it a lot harder

Ding ding ding!

Back when I had my first wallet as a child, thats what my father told me.

Also, I'd think it was more prone to fall out if it was in your back pocket.

I don't carry my wallet in my front pocket.

I carry it the back and I'm very conscious of it being there to the point that I never liked girls to "insert their hand" into the other empty pocket. While I don't know how fast I'd catch the individual I'm so conscious of it without ever missing a beat that when it's not in my rear pocket I'm very distressed.

What I did find interesting is that a google search netted lots of "front pocket wallets" which I assume are designed to be carried in front pockets since they are shaped different than rear pockets.

I never would have guessed that they made wallets specifically for the front pocket.

I wear my wallet in the front. I can't imagine sitting on a wallet and trying to be comfortable. And the pickpocketing thing.

But even though Gail Simone insists it's not a small penis joke, it does sound like one in the context. If not that, then at least some sort of comment on insecurity.

Maybe the person who is hinting at it thinks that guys who put their wallet in their front pocket are trying to hiding their "tent." Personally thats the first thing that comes to mind for me when I think about it. Sadly, I put my wallet in the front pocket because it feels uncomfortable being in the back.

A little trick to help the back pocketers is to fold your wallet over a pocket sized comb and drop it in there inverted over the comb. If the picker tries to pull your wallet out the comb offers at least enough resistance to make you notice it. Typically it's enough resistance that you have to fight it yourself to get it out.

Who'd want to sit on a wallet all day?

Of course the "gentlemanly" thing to do is to carry the wallet inside your jacket breast pocket.

If I carry my big fat wallet in my back pocket, it strains my lower back. Solution? Front pocket!

Whenever possible I carry it in my jacket or bag to avoid the bulk, especially when wearing jeans.

I have no idea what it is that 'they' say.

My friend who is a very respected Chiropractor says that guys who keep their wallet in their back pocket tend to have more back problems, due to sitting with the added pressure & uneven lump on that part of the back.

And yes, & guys afraid of pick pockets are smart enough to carry theirs in their front pocket.

very true, when I go on long drives or sit for long hours at my desk, I take my wallet out of my pocket and put it somewhere else.

I do, indeed, own a "front pocket wallet". It's more like a billfold with places to hold credit cars.

I keep my wallet in my front pocket simply because it's more comfortable that way. I hate the feel of it pressing up against my ass all day (besides the face that it's incredibly bad for your posture). The fact that it's harder to pickpocket is just a fringe benefit.

I keep mine in the front pocket for two reason:

1. Last time I put mine in my back pocket, it was 30 minutes before it fell out and I left it in a public place, only for it to be returned to security with no money in it.

2. It feels awkward. When you sit down, you are sitting on your........wallet. I mean come on, how is that comfortable. Who wants to sit on a piece of leather. I don't feel like grabbing it out of my backpocket and putting it in my front pocket everytime I sit down, either. Why not just keep it in the front!

I don't like a wallet in my front pocket. The cost following from that is sitting on a great lump of a wallet that can become an issue when driving or sitting in a waiting room. That and the shattered bits of plastic that my bank cards, credit cards etc get regularly reduced to from me stirring my buttock on them when seeking a more comfortable perch.

But I really don't like carrying my wallet in my front pocket unless I am in a large crowd.

Makes me think of George Costanza's big ass wallet with everything stuffed inside.

I carry mine in my back pocket but I don't enough time to sit for too long to see if it causes me any problems. And I have been known to put it up front when in heavily crowded areas.

My wallet has a zipper on it. I use that part of the wallet to keep phone numbers and other small bits of paper. Last time I sat down with it in my back pocket, the zipper was only half closed. Punched a hole in my debit card and liscense. I hardly ever have it in my back pocket anymore.

I dunno.. I have always held it in the back pocket. I find if I put things in my front pockets they are more prone to falling out. Like Cyn, I am very concious about it and you will notice me "pat" my butt while walking, just to be sure everything is where it should be.. Also in crowds I will often pull my pants forward to put pressure on my wallet so I know it is there.

I also can't stand larger wallets so sitting on it doesn't bother me.. Sitting on a wallet for 8 hours, no problem. Only once I take it out during a drive does it not go back into the pocket. How those guys with the 3 inch wallets deal with it, I will never know.

Back pocket , sitting sideways so its deeper into the pocket.

I also cannot stand "fat" wallets, and I try to keep as little as possible in my wallet at all times. This reduces the feel of it even being there.

Then to add to that, I often "feel" for my wallet while walking in public because I am constantly being aware of my surroundings.

So here we are, 24 responses later, and the answer is that nobody here knows either.

Post a question looking for an explanation of a punchline, and get a serious discussion of where to carry a wallet. I don't mind, this has been an interesting discussion, and I have enjoyed hearing the strategies, many of which are similar to purse safety.

Basic purse safety, by the way, is, when somewhere where getting picked/snatched is common, wear the purse witht the shoulder strap over one shoulder, and the bag under the other, ie, right shoulder, left arm, with the clasp on the inside.

Ok, back to the joke. Let's look at the clues. This is Huntress, who has a chip on her shoulder the size of a redwood, and who wouldn't hesitate to insult any guy who didn't live up to her tough guy standards of manliness. In the first instance, she's talking to a piece of scum, so it makes sense that she'd want to belittle him. In the second it's a good guy, a close friend, amn she was formerly involved with, and someone she knows is a major league badass. She may be expressing disapproval of his expressed desire to step away from the heroing biz for a bit to collect himself after a series of traumatic events, and this is a playful way of doing it.

I'm guessing it doesn't really have a specific meaning, but is just a generic insult to a guy's macho image. Or perhaps Gail is being coy because it doesn't really have a meaning; it's meant to be a tease for the fanboys to obsess over.

The tangent this has gone off on has been kind of amusing...

theories.... since putting the wallet in the front pocket is to prevent pickpockets is she implying that they are chicken who are afraid to fight for their wallets? Or just plain scared or getting mugged.

I checked urbandictionary.com for wallets and front pocket and closest they had was pocketboy but that definition made no sense..

Maybe she's just using it as a term for being cautious?

It would fit because Nightwing isn't a cautious kind of guy...so thus she wouldn't pick him as a front pocket kind of guy.

I'm certainly not afraid to fight for my wallet - the problem is that I don't pay a lot of attention to my surroundings, so it's entirely likely that my wallet could be gone half an hour before I realize it - and there's no way I'd ever get it back.

What exactly is the advantage of keeping your wallet in a back pocket anyway? Please tell me, why do you NOT keep your wallet in your front pocket?

As for the original topic, I have no idea what that means. I suspect the author made something up or used an inside joke just so everyone else would wonder.

Before I post twice in this thread, I gotta say I really have no idea about what the author is saying either time it is mentioned.

As for your question, if you really must now:
Left front: Always has cash, cellphone, pen, and coins.
Right front: Always has keys, and keys only.

So , as you can see I have no room for a wallet with the rest of those items there. Although quite often if I am wearing any form of a cargo pant/shorts I'll toss the wallet in the left bottom pocket (near the knee cap).

So its really a matter of space shortages.

Dockers are nice too since they generally have a button on the back pockets limiting all chances of pickpocketing.

And I don't know what I can offer to the original topic other than perhaps as others suggested, being cautious. I'm not familiar with the person the author is refering to, but as I mentioned earlier, when my wallet is in front, I suppose I am being cautious.

I think the front pocket comment is one of those "girly-man" sort of insults. Tough guys carry their wallets in their back pocket with a chain attached to it. Girly-men play it safe.

I carry my wallet in my inside jacket pocket or in my backpack. I also have a very slim leather card holder that I put essentials in for going out or... I just carry ID in my back pocket and cash in one of my front pockets. It's the keys and coins that are the real hassle. Lots of coinage in Canada.

I really enjoying this cashless society thing. I can pay for just about everything with my credit or debit card so carrying wads of cash doesn't even make sense anymore. I ALWAYS carry a bit of cash though, cause you never know.
