Why NSFW?

Why are some threads marked "NSFW" when, due to user avatars, every thread is potentialy NSFW? Not that I care, but it seems silly that someone would actually come here at work.

Also, are there any other forums/sites like this? or is this the only one of it's kind?

[edit] Nevermind, I saw the link board. Sorry, I'm a "noob"

TFP is very unique in many respects. NSFW is used as a means of warning that the main content is not safe for work, but you are right about the avatars. Any page is potentially NSFW due to avatars. Anyways, some people come here during work because their jobs are boring as hell. I remember that when I was a database programmer (sort of) last summer, I spent most of my time doing other things, maybe... say 70% of the time actually working, 30% of the time goofing off. :D

The_Dude 06-14-2003 09:44 PM

most people that surf from work have the option to view avatar's turned off.

Yes. If you go into the usercp you have the option of disabling avatars and sigs.

Jasmar 06-15-2003 05:47 PM

I think its just more of a universal sign that there are pictures of naked people in the topic

cheerios 06-15-2003 05:50 PM

I surf from school sometimes, turn off avs, but there's still the occassional surprise. and a NSFW is appreciated, if it's in gen disc, or members.

SaltPork 06-18-2003 07:34 PM

I come to TFP from work all the time. I'm a SW engineer so I need a diversion from time to time whilst debugging stuff. I just shut off the avatars...sometimes.

Even with avatars on, a 100x100 avatar is different than an 800x600 naked woman.

you could still get fired over a naked woman in 50 x 50

elven 06-25-2003 08:21 AM

It would suck pretty bad to be fired for something that you didn't intend to appear...

I agree, but getting fired for any reason probably sucks.

As for web usage, most larger companies have policies that focus on surfing non-work related sites and inappropriate content, in general, regardless of whether it is visible to others. In other words, even if nobody sees......if the employer wants to make an issue of it......they can.

Sad.....but well within their rights.

losfp 06-28-2003 01:32 AM

ahhh.. is THAT what NSFW stands for... :D I've been too lazy to look it up.

Must remember that..

Rowlf 06-28-2003 09:52 PM

Ummm... I've been registered about *checks watch* 7 minutes now. What, might I ask, is an Avatar?

</ignorance>

OR, those little pictures some members have under their names on the left :)

thanks losfp, couldn't have answered it better myself :D

Amazing what you find out when you ask . . . . or look when someone else asks . . .

Insomniac(uk) 07-24-2003 02:32 AM

NSFW, Not suitable for Work *Slaps head in recognition* I've been trying to think of an acronnym on the lines of

Nice Sexy feminine wiles

oh well

juanvaldes 07-25-2003 04:31 PM

Not Safe For Work.

egorey 07-27-2003 07:33 PM

I thought it was just a way to increase your reads per post...

actually, I appreciate the warnings.

aedenji 07-28-2003 06:27 PM

I think that the NSFW is agreat thing but anyone who comes here from a work pc has either A really liberal job that doesn't care or is simply taking chances. :)

jibs 08-02-2003 08:00 PM

Also, as a side benefit.. turning off avatars and sigs makes threads a little easier to read... less distractions.

Averett 08-20-2003 06:16 AM

I've been wondering what this means. Makes sense.
