Thread titles in caps?
Ever seen those thread titles all in caps that end with (caps)? I'm completely confused by those. I know it's in caps; the author apparently knows it as well. Can you shed any light on this, O TFP?
BTW, I put the thread here because I wasn't sure where it belonged... |

And now, in normal people speak: I can read just fine without the fucking caps. Gah. The people who do this constantly really annoy the hell out of me. It doesn't get my attention any better, it won't make me read the thread any quicker. It just makes me say "Hell, who turned up the volume on your keyboard."

As for all caps - it seems to me like the person isn't sure how to get their point across so has to shout in typing to try to do it. As I say to my daughter - Talk to me in a normal voice and say please or I won't listen. To be honest - I don't even always read the stickies that are in caps. Only if I'm posting in the forum which it applies to or I can tell it's something that's truely important that I won't figure out by just watching and listening in the other discussions. One thing I never understood is useing Caps and then using a period instead of exclammation points. It's completely contrary. Sometimes I'll capitalize a whole word in a sentence but it's only to put emphasis on that word in the way that I would in oral communication. Anyone who does use all caps a lot have an explanation for their need to use it??

And while we're discussing annoying posting styles, how about the one where you post everything in color? There was someone who used post everyting in red, and his posts were often interesting, but I stopped trying to read it because it hurt my eyes too much; the color contrast is horrible if you use Sandstorm. I don't remember who it was, so I don't know if he stopped doing it or just left. No matter.

This thread is full of how-NOT-to-post ideas. So .... Let's all remember to 1. turn off the caps lock key 2. keep attitudes in check 3. be considerate 4. be mature

Also, I Don't Understand Peoples Reasoning When They Choose To Type Like This. This Method Frustrates Me More Than All Caps, I Believe, And Is Just Slightly Below The Ugly Font Color Syndrome.

Personally.....I do tend to use capitals, When I Want Someone To Pay Attention.
And just before I decide to add Color....Which means I am getting Pissed. Anything beyond that....Usually only one person will see

I think cap use is good for anouncement stuff.
I did a semi-cap thread title today (and I'm proud of it !) j/k but caps can be usefull for some things. like if you type the word BOTTLE; you just killed two birds with one stone.

i never knew that typing in caps was so bad. it seems that everyone hates it. it doesn't bother me and i don't know why it's that big of a deal. i guess i'll go find an internet ettiquette book somewhere. there's got to be other things that someone shouldn't be doing.

Even if all caps didn't mean shouting, it's still horrible because it's much harder to read (for me, anyway). The letters blend together. Lower case letters were invented for a reason. I Certainly Don't Mind Cap Each Word Nearly As Much As All Caps, But It Does Make Even Less Sense Because It's So Difficult To Type While To Do All Caps You Just Hit Caps Lock And Don't Need To Bother With Shift.
However, I too must say I don't recall ever seeing a thread on any message board in my life that had a title written in all caps with (caps) at the end.

Okay this is my first time doing a quote so lets see how it goes.... This has to be one of the funniest things Ive ever seen... because I have no idea what you just said but I know what you mean! 1tz A11 Ab0u7 teh 1337 hax0rz!!11!!one!!11eleventy! roflomgbbq!!!11! And this has to be the only board I have ever been to in my life where intellegent discusions go on. The only other boards I really go to are guitar related ones (all they do is make fun of people) and gaming ones (these people all talk like that above 'sentance' I just wrote). So keep up the good work guys, you all rule |

I just wrote "Don't type like this" in the most obnoxious 1337 that I could. And I have to agree with you: There are occasionally intelligent discussions on the other boards I go to, but TFP blows them away. That may be why I have about 8 times the number of posts here...

As for color, we had one person who always used red (you can try searching for [color=red] and see who comes up with 3000 results, but I'm not sure if it indexes tags,) and others are usually used by mods to draw attention to important stuff. If I post in color, you can use this handy scale to see how I'm feeling and how seriously you should take what I'm saying: Yellow: miffed (Also: Thread closure imminent) Yellow (directed at you): Read the fucking rules Orange: irked Orange (directed at you): next time you hit refresh, you're probably going to get a popup saying "New Private message. Subject: [Official Warning] ..." Red (not directed at anyone): Pissed. Temp bans may start flying. Red (directed at you): Word your next post carefully. While it's on the screen, it takes only 16 seconds to get to the mod/admin control panel and ban you. Last edited by MSD; 05-21-2005 at 04:35 PM.. |

I don't mind it when mods post in color. It's actually a headsup if I'm only skimming the thread. To me, a colored post means "hey, this is important". So when I see a post in orange or purple or red that says "Hey, lol I agree with the last poster", I'm kinda annoyed. It's kind of like shouting fire for a sunburn.
