bobby pins

I'm seeing more and more females donning bobby pins as if they're supposed to be used as a barrette. It was my understanding they're to be used in updo's and such to clip the hair in, remaining invisible to the eye.

Do any of you use bobby pins as barrettes? Do people just find them cute or is it the 'in' thing or whatever?

Bobby pins used as barettes have been haunting the public scene since I was 9, as far as i can tell. Girls my age would pop them in to hide flyaway strands, and it'd look ridiculous.
I don't think its an "in" thing, I just think people are lazy and don't know what bobby pins are really used for. :P
Being a retired ballet dancer myself that used them properly, I find it annoying as hell. I remember seeing some girls with pins all over their head, ugh, RIDICULOUS.

It's not that it's an "in" thing to do, they are just easy. I'll throw one in my bangs to keep them out of my face but I do my best to hide it under the shortest layer. I'm a hairstylist and you are right. They are supposed to be hidden.

Yeah. I did hair for a few years. Considering going back to it as of yesterday. We'll see.

But I'm just not big on the bobby pins holding back the bangs on both sides of a middle part, etc. It's like it's nerdy chic or something.

I like Lady Bear will use them periodically to hold bangs back while I am in lab. Some barrettes make creases in my hair that I don't want to walk around with all day.

Mostly though I use them to hold my hair up if I am doing an entire up-do or a half up-do. The tend to hold much better than barrettes. Plus they are much cheaper. Can't beat 99 of the lil suckers for a dollar, and then if I lose them I don't care nearly as much.

I do have to say some girls use them to the extreme! Gah they use like 5 of them all in a row, one right after the other...that is weird and tacky to me.

When I'm in a lab, I go for utter class (lmao, yeah right, me?) and tie my hair back in a bandana. Or, that's what I used to do, anyways, when I had bangs and much shorter hair that couldn't fit in a ponytail. I was always of the habit in my microbio labs to use a bandana regardless of the length of my hair, it makes me more comfortable. This term, I haven't used the bandana. My hair is really long now, and no bangs anymore.

The pins in the bun, fine, the pins everywhere else, gross.

Bandanna would make my hair frizz, my lab gets hot and my head sweats!

That alone tells me you have good taste.

star - do the bobby pins not leave a little kink anyways? Especially if you get so hot that you sweat?

Hey, now, nothing wrong with a middle part Then again, I'm a nerd. This has been established.

I'm not into hair. I'm a wash-and-wear girl. But even *I* know bobby pins are supposed to be hidden. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed this, and thought it was weird.

My Mother forced me to have middle parts as a child. I loathed it. *shakes it off* It's nothing personal lol.

Surprisingly, no. If they do its nothing compared to the large bumps that barrettes leave. My bangs are slim enough that they sit in the nook of the bobby pin. Now granted I do not wear in this way outside of my lab. The only person who may ever see it this way is my Malaysian co-grad student, and I don't think he'd notice if I had an elephant on my head.
