two periods, on the pill

i just was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. today i woke up and was suddenly on my period (again!)....but i'm on the pill and it's not placebo week....i've still got another whole week of regular pills before i should be on...so this makes my second period this month...anyone have any clue why this happened?
comments/suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated.

oh and btw i've been on the pill since sept 03 and i've never had two periods in one month, even before the pill.

I've had this happen, but only lightly. Have you skipped a pill or changed the time you're taking them or something? That can cause you to spot a little. There are a million things that could make you bleed a little, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if it is heavy and you are getting cramps you might want to check in with a doctor.

I agree with pinklily- I've been on and off the pill for 12 years now. Usually when I start taking it again after a respite, I have a few good months, then one where I have breakthrough bleeding.

It's messy and bothersome, but probably nothing to worry about- if it happens again next month, call your doctor and see if it's the pill, or your body, that's causing it.

Yeah this has happened to me. My gynecologist said if its lighter than a normal period, you can take an extra pill as soon as you notice it happening (in addition to the pill you normally take that day.) Though I've also heard/experienced this because of a low-carb diet. Mine started at first because of a change in a thyroid hormone pill dosage.

A *lot* of things can cause spotting/breakthrough bleeding when you're on the pill; the synthetic hormones don't allow the uterine lining to build and strengthen or some such (which is also why usually people get lighter periods on the placebo week.)

Anyway, like teriaki said, if its bothering you, talk to your doctor.

I don't mean to be overly pesimistic, but are you having sex? Maybe it was an abortion? Hope you're all right.

I had this once. I had started a week before I was to start the sugar pills. I have 3 weeks of white pills and a week of the green ( green when I should start) Anyways a week before I started the green ones I got my period. I called the doctor to ask why I was getting my period a week early she asked a few questions of if I was feeling sick, or missed any pills. I got what was known as break through bleeding. Rather then having my period for the normal amount of time of 3 to 7 days I had it for 14 days straight. It was because the pill I was on wasnt strong enough and I had to go into get a stronger perscription. Once I got put on the new pills everything was back to normal.

I'm on the patch (love it) and have longer periods with more blood flow then I did before being on it. I was wondering if it is due to the patch or age (almost -- yikes -- 42.) I'm probably highjacking the thread -- but it seems to fit here.

I was on the pill for years and occasionally had spotting/breakthrough bleeding, usually when my daily schedule was disrupted in some way, as in hours late in taking it or forgetting to take it all together, but never to the extent that you describe. I think a call to the Dr. is definitely in order.

I have been on pills since Aug 2000. I have had trouble with spotting and migranes and have switched pills more than 5 times. I can't remember exactly how many times. The Dr changed the ratio of progesterone to estrogen or raised the dosage all-together more than once. I'm finally to a dosage where I don't have any spotting or even a period for 91 days. I have gone through hormone changes in my body and stress and health have a lot to do with it too. I think it would be in your best interest to call your Dr. She might even change your prescription for you over the phone instead of you having to have another apt. My Dr has done that for me. I wouldn't panic. It's normal to have spotting with any BC pill at some time. Your Dr can just help you get rid of that annoying anomaly. Don't worry. Good Luck.

In responseto the "two periods", I have been on the pill for 9 years and have had this same thing happen. I've also experienced starting your period again after only having ended a week ago, I then continued to bleed heavily for three weeks after that. So if anyone can help me with that one let me know.

I had a full fledged period for a full month once so I feel your pain. It is very draining going for long periods. Sometimes it can just be hormones. If it happens again or maybe even before then you should see yoru Dr about it. Especially since you aren't on the pill. Breakthrough bleeding or irregular or long periods can be symptoms of more serious problems including endometriosis and other problems. Your Dr is best able to help you with that and repeated extended periods is not healthy for you and can make you anemic among other things. Hopefully it will only be a hormone change in your body.
