Ok, maybe I'm just too young or naive or something, but could someone clarify the topic? Thx!

Good evening,

The Pink Elephant is an icon of inebriety in early 20th century literature and cartoons.

In Jack London's John Barleycorn, an autobiographical memoir of 1913, he writes; "There are, broadly speaking, two types of drinkers. There is the man whom we all know, stupid, unimaginative, whose brain is bitten numbly by numb maggots; who walks generously with wide-spread, tentative legs, falls frequently in the gutter, and who sees, in the extremity of his ecstasy, blue mice and pink elephants. He is the type that gives rise to the jokes in the funny papers."

Disney’s 1941 classic, Dumbo has an excellent scene involving Pink Elephants. Even 63 years later it is still cool to watch.

The cocktail culture of the late 40’s and 50’s embraced the “beast of bourbon” as a friendly warning sign during a night’s drunken adventure.

I guess it is loosing its sex appeal with the kids today.

Well I still don't get it so maybe I will see what everyone else comes up with before I start my entry.

JazzmanAl 01-18-2004 10:11 PM

Drunk, man. Seeing the pink elephant == being wasted. Like dumbo and the little mouse, or the man falling into the gutter. Or, it could just be a huge, pink elephant. Either way, I am looking foward to the responses.

GoldenOuroboros 01-18-2004 11:11 PM

That's the scene I remember G.H

Where Dumbo gets tanked and see all the pink elephants! That's an early childhood memory! :D

Good morning,

next week: monkeys

bernadette 01-19-2004 08:34 AM

nice, GH! love the can, which i presume is beer, held with his trunk. please, tell me that you draw with a tablet & not just a mouse.

and hehe. i already had sent a PM to GO enquiring about the reference to pink elephants. i think i am going to rent "Dumbo" this week simply because i've never seen it.

Giant Hamburger 01-19-2004 08:49 AM

Hail Bernadette!

Strangely enough, I draw with the little red nub in the keyboard of my laptop at home. It probably isn't the best way but it is all I know. I would love to try out a tablet sometime.

The pink elephant scene in Dumbo is definitely worth a look.

well GH, i am very impressed with the great control that you have with your laptop nub (that sounds a little wrong, huh? *giggles*)

i am currently awaiting the delivery of a wacom tablet. it will be an interesting change, because although i write & draw traditionally with my left hand, i mouse draw strictly with my right. i've heard several other southpaws say the same thing tho.

This will actually make you quite powerful with the wacom tablet. When using your drawing programs, you can still operate the mouse with said right hand, and let the creativity flow through your left hand. You'll be a lean, mean, drawing machine. Woo!

AND - Kudos to GH. I am impressed by your nub-manipulating skills. Seriously. That's amazing.

nosuchuserexist 01-19-2004 12:09 PM

I don't want to hear anything else about GH's nub-manipulating...keep that at home man!

GH's nub....pink elephants....all a little too creepy for this boy...

Me thinks you doth protest too loudly.
If it feels good does it matter that the origin of the pleasure is from a Giant Hamburger?

Just look at a nub

GoldenOuroboros 01-19-2004 02:02 PM

bernadette 01-19-2004 03:31 PM

aw GO! my tablet just arrived a little while ago!!!!! w00t~!
it's the wacom intuos 2 platinum (9x12).

i will hafta wait for hubby to hook it up for me, cuz i am hardware retard & coward.

and are you kidding, GH?! you draw with that tiny little red button? i've never seen such a thing. but hafta say, the placement on your keyboard has got to be more than a coincidence. it just has to be.

GoldenOuroboros 01-19-2004 06:33 PM

Next week: something awesome

Snoogans 01-24-2004 06:05 PM

I was so excited to see what people were going to make of this, and now it's over...

Mr. Hamburger: as always, I am in awe of your talent and creativity.

I hope to see more contributions for next week.

bernadette 01-24-2004 06:27 PM

hey snoogans? can we extend this one a few more days? [puppy eyes] pleeeease...

GoldenOuroboros 01-24-2004 08:59 PM

This can go on for as long as it wants.. if people want to make contributions later.. go ahead. But as for suggestions for next week. the poll is closed.

Unfortunately I left my decision on what to do right till the end.. and now I have a damn cold and can't do much about it. I WILL post up what I want to do still tho.. but now.. onto the next one!

bernadette 02-03-2004 01:29 PM

<img src="http://photobucket.com/albums/1003/m0us33/pink_elephant2.jpg">

it stinks, but there ya go ;D

Giant Hamburger 02-03-2004 02:16 PM

Hail Bernadette!

I like it alot.
Your art is as cute and sweet as you are.
Did you use alpha channel to get the multiple image effect?
I am also glad you are pointing out that there need not be a deadline for these threads.

Your admirer,
-GH

GoldenOuroboros 02-03-2004 02:44 PM

Great Bernadette!
Love it! :D
Like the way it is blured and multilayered
Is it from personal reference? ;) :p

bernadette 02-05-2004 04:27 PM

thanks GH & GO.

GH, nope. not the alpha channels. just duplicated layers, adjusting the transparency. actually, i haven't bother to learn how to use the alpha channels yet... someday...

and yes, GO, personal experience referenced ;)
