Critique on this? (GIMP)

I never have done "real" visual/graphic art, because... well, I suck at it. So I sketch. But those aren't good either. But a friend pointed me to GIMP, and wow. I love it. I was just kind of playing around, and listening to Rob Dougan's "Clubbed to Death (Kurayamino Variation)", and... well... I liked what came out.

I paid the price for it being so big, as my poor li'l laptop hung twice working on it. I ended up calling it "Pregnant Universe" as it brought to mind this theory of how the universe expands, then collapses, expands, then collapses... so on and so forth ad nauseaum. I just figured that she might have some stretch marks.

Anyway, can't attach it here because it's over 2mb - yeah yeah, I need to figure out how to lower the filesize - so all that I can attach is the preview file. Please see the full-view (1600x1200), it is here:

Interesting stuff. Looks like ice crystals on glass.

Very nice.

GIMP is just an open source image manipulation program... like a Stradivarius is just a violin. Honestly, this thing constantly blows my mind.

It has all the standard cut-paste-shade-paint-draw-cube-sphere-fill-blahdedah stuff that every program from MSpaint on up has, but then it also has a fractal renderer, with many presets, and lots of settings to tweak.

You can look at this page for more information, and you should be able to find a download - there is also a windows implementation, though GIMP is a GNU application, so you will also need to install GTK+ 2 for Windows (or better, if there is such) if you have not already.

I got my copy of GIMP from the "GIMP for Windows" section, and then from the first link in that section. It really is an amazing program.

<--- not a fan of lensflares, mainly due to the overuse of them in school....not a fan of the peice itself either really, i say that because it looks unfinished, but the color does set the mood for a nice looking peice with more work put into it..and since you said you dont' do graphic stuff really, and that you said you suck at it, i won't go in detail

Fractals are fun, but I agree with gallopingwanker: rendered lensflares scream n00b...

If this is the kind of thing you like, perhaps you should play with just striaght fractal generation, rather than manipulating them afterwards.

Good. I needed to here somebody give me some negatives to it, as nobodies come out and just smacked me with some, and I know there are a bunch of them.

Lensflares... yeah. I am new at this, and I was playing with some nice fractals yesterday, and just quit because I wanted to touch it up a little with a little flare-type thing - but not a lens-flare - and haven't figured out how to yet. Meh.. It's hard to explain, but yes, I understand it's not good.

That said, I am very appreciative of your posts (all of them but the negative-pointing-out ones of gallopingwanker and twistedmosaic especially), and taking the time to say so, as most people (myelf included I must admit) just ignore what they don't like unless they are very bored. If that was the case, might I suggest Tetris? Can't beat tetris. Until I prefect my fractal skills at least. Then....... I will beat tetris at its own game.

yup, it looks like you went from one GIMP feature to another without any direction in mind. Then you quit and posted it. Basically all you did is show us that GIMP can make fractals and flares and showed us nothing more.

It looks like you were heading towards an abstract of nature. Give yourself a direction before you begin the next piece.
