new wacom tablet

yay for 6x8" intuos3, here's a quick self portrait.

any pointers for color fills? I'd like to eventually simplify my style and maybe do a little cartooning (just for fun; not for a living, mind you) but I have little practice with coloring and shading on a computer...

Cool drawing.
What program are you using? If you are using painter, I like to make a new layer for painting in the color so you can leave the line drawing the way it is. Just change the layer type to multiply on the new layer and you will be golden.

that's pretty darn good, bermuDa.
i'd just like to see some little hint of your bottom lip.

and yeah, a separate layer beneath your line drawing would probably be the best way to go about coloring or shading.

yeah i did the quick gradiant on a separate layer. by shading i mean skintones and whatnot, if there's a quick but effective method for doing that... usually i find myself losing interest in the drawing by the time i get around to shading it.

I'm in class now but i'll see how it loos with a bit of the lower lip...

I didn't know you could draw so well!!!!! I would love to get a tablet, but from what I was told, being a lefty and using my right hand for all mouse moving, it's hard to coordinate. Anyone who has a comment regarding this conundrum, please pm me?

the tablet is a mouse replacement, it actually comes with a mouse that goes with the tablet, and the pen is more for drawing purposes but can be used as a mouse as well. I still use my normal mouse more because my ms mouse is more comfortable than the wacom one.

you should definitely look into them, they're very cool indeed

That's really impressive for a line drawing. It looks like you've used a tablet before. Are you going to sell the old one (if you indeed have an older one)?

Looks damn good! I'm considering getting a 6X8... is it good? Does it feel too small or okay? That was one of my concerns...

I use a pair of 21" monitors and my old 4x5" graphire did feel a bit small when i mapped it to a single monitor. the 6x8 is perfect if not a little too big in comparison. the software allows you to do a lot of stuff with the mapping size both on the monitor and the tablet, so you can adjust it to perfection.

If I were to get a tablet for a laptop i'd go for the 4x5", but the 6x8" is great for my desktop.

Very nice drawing, plenty of life in it. An idea for colouring is to only colour bits, like how you coloured in the eyes, maybe some pink to define the lips, some different highlights in the hair, skintones around the nosewings, eyes, jaw, in the creases on the hands, likewise some colour on the edges of the shirt. If you look at fashion illustrations you can see that style of colouring, it's very quick yet informative.
