They're all really hard on the eyes, except the Dawn one, because of it's simplicity. Everything just clashes in the other ones...

But yeah, what Dizzet said. I think you should cut down on the effects and try to keep it simple. Simplicity is good.

I'm suprised by peoples reactions... I like them a lot. They show you have some excellent photoshop skills. Although it's true they may be a bit too busy to be desktop wallpapers, they are all excellent creations.

Yeah, I liked them too, maybe not for my desktop, but they are nice none-the-less. I can take criticism as much as the next guy, but sheesh, some of these posts were just too harsh!

Nice work! I couldn't have done most of these.

In agreement with crackprogram and todd, these aren't bad at all, infact they all bely a level of skill. granted they do leave a little wanting, like the vast majority are a little "busy" for my liking, and some have a few too many colors (especially bright colors). But that comes down to personal preference.

The beautiful thing about art is that it is personal preference. you do what you feel and what you like. about the time you start worrying about what anyone else thinks, then it loses it's meaning.

Basically what i'm saying is Constructive Criticism = Good
Jerkwads tearing you down mearly for the sake of tearing you down = retarded

PS: I'm borrowing your "Dawn" ones as a desktop. ;o)

did you draw the "The Dawn" pieces yourself or have you manipulated some original picture instead?

I think they're great, Decap. Not sure why some people have been aggressive.
Again, did you draw the pictures? If not, no worries, just be honest.

i don't think anyone has been aggressive, he has received some criticism yes, but nothing harsh...and if the person takes it as harsh, we'll they just need to suck it up...if you can't take critisism, you're in trouble...

they are amateur due to the quality of the work, and are annoying due to the horrid use of colors....criticism believe it or not, can be objective, just because people post work doesn't mean i will say good things about it, if i see good points i will acknowledge them...and if i don't like it, i'm not going to be nice and lie to them, that's not my style, i've learned to be some what harsh because people being harsh to me when i started helped alot....

Thats pretty discouraging if this person is just starting out. Can't you make suggestions? "annoying" and "horrid" don't give any guidance.

What did they say?

Personally, I hate being criticised, but it certainly makes me dig in my heels and try harder if i can spot where the improvements can be made. However, your comments wouldn't give me any guidance. If I created the above and got that response I wouldn't know how to make my colours less annoying or horrid, I'd probably just try my best to ignore you. Which is a shame, because the work on your website suggests you could be of real help to this person.

PS: I like your website. Your work is very cool. Would you agree there is a fine art element to some of your stuff?

well, when i started out, i didn't want people to say "your stuff is ok", when it wasn't, i dont' want to be lied to or have watered down comments, because you can't learn from them, so if my stuff was shit, i want to be told it's shit, so i can take a second look and try to recognize why it sucks...so i've learned to be harsh because it's helped me rethink things i do...and if you're wanting in the business you're going to get hammered by people 100x's more harsh than i am...so, in all fairness i should have given better criticism along with calling it annoying, and having horrid colors..which i will do in a minute...but if i continue to be bitched at for being harsh with points, i'm just going to leave this forum, because this is a reoccuring thing that has been happening to me....but that's a whole different story...on to in depth crits...

ok, the first peice is very sloppy, with the very rough squiggly lines, lens flare, and the type on the side...my suggestion for this peice is to take out the white squiggles, and remove the text on the side, but place the text back in, in a uniform, yet more dynamic way following the grid, because the text as it is now looks like it is in a newsletter, not a desktop image...also, for the images behind the decap, i would maybe guassian blur them to the back if you want to keep them because they are contrasting with the rest of the image....

the second peice is my most disliked peice..i can see what some people would like this because of the background, which very hard on the eyes, and it looks like you would need 3d glasses for it, which is also a no-no...my suggestion for this peice is to maybe take the background down to a bar like the first wallpaper has, and fade the both sides of the bar to black, with a possible tv line pattern in it, changing the hue/saturation could do some good too....

i don't have anymore time to comment on any other peices, but, take my suggesions or leave them. i dont' care.

thanks for the comment on my website, i think there is a fine art factor in my stuff, because it's what i did before i became a designer, so i can see how it could entwine themselves together somewhat...

As a former teaching assistant and current student, telling someone their work 'is shit' and 'horrid' is not teaching them a thing. Showing them what they can do to improve the work is. As for continuing to be bitched at for being harsh, perhaps tempering your comments to be more constructive and less opinionated will make you far more friends and not subject you to the comments. You have to look no further than your own words.
I took a look at your site-you are very good, but not my 'style', but no matter how much it isn't, I would never be as negative as you have been.

As for the work presented in this thread-it too is not to my tastes-too much of anything on one work is hard on the eyes and kills any focal point, so work on that-your work should represent you, but those who look upon it should be able to see what it is you are trying to convey. The "Dawn" works are very good, if indeed she is your creation-almost Boris Vallejo in their execution. Don't whip things out willy-nilly. Take your time on each piece(note the spelling) and let it speak to you. Good luck.

constructive criticism is usually hard to swallow but it is one the best tools for making you into the artist you never thought you could be. Keep trucking. True talent can only take you so far. Practice is the key.

Hey G, I think you sound like a nice guy and you shouldn't take peoples comments to heart. I'm sure you'd rather i didn't point this out, but ironically, your reaction to peoples critiscism of the way you present your own crits, proves that sometimes critiscism can be hard to take.

However, its important to acknowledge that in this medium we can only see these written words. The subtletly of what is being said can often be lost over the web. Its probably best that none of us take these conversations to heart because in person things would often be easier to palatte and sometimes less antagonistic (did you like my ART pun!? I deliberately misspelled palate!! heh... never mind...)

Anyway: Mr Gallopingwanker, please don't leave the forums, because I've only been here a short while and I would feel rotten to be the partial cause of someone of such obvious skill and intelligence missing out on all this heated debate!! ; )

Anyway again; nice work Decap. Do you see what can be done to cultivate your stuff?

phew...

This has got out of hand... I know that these are not "Grade A" wallpapers. I just mess around with them, Teaching myself.. I'm not hurt for someone saying they are annoying or shitty. Yeah i might use the effects alot but i'm just learning. I'll show some banners i have made, maybe they are not as annoying..

To answere the questions about DAWN, she isnot my beautiful creation, Joseph Michael Linsner created her in a comic book called DAWN. i couldnt find any wallpapers of her so i had to make my own because i'm in love with her, heh.. Maybe i shouldnt have posted them..

Most everything i make is for my band and my DJing, some banners are from a banner contest i won but the page is no longer up oh well.. the rebels of egypt banner is my latest work.. yee-haw

I thank anyone who gives advice, criticism, and props!

Maybe it's because I'm not an art critic or even knowledgable in that area that makes me like them. I really like the 2 Dawn pics and there's something about the second pic that really gets me in - maybe the colours? Either way I think they are good!
