Keep Clear of the Needle

As much as I wish I was as gifted as everyone else in this forum with drawing, painting, and graphic art, I've accepted my fate. However, I must say I am darn good (pun intended ) with a needle. I was taking pictures today of some of the things I've sewn for someone who wanted to see them, so thought I'd throw them up here. They're my creative outlet, since I never stick 100% to the patterns that come with the thread. There aren't many closeups since I wasn't sure what would be interesting to people, but let me know if you want to see closer sections, and I'll oblige.

First project: 6 months - Waiting until I have a pattern or room to match to put a backing on the baby quilt.

Second project: My favorite of all the pieces I've done - 4 months

Closeup of most defined horse:

Third Project: only one left of several I made as christmas gifts - 1 week

Fourth Project: I try to make mementos of my trips - this is from Chapel Hill, NC - 4 months

Current Project: School was really busy, I swear! 11+ months

Hoop removed:

I don't have my quilt in a large enough assembly to show that, but as soon as I finish that iris set, that's my next big project. My sewing machine has been a little lonely lately.

I love the detail in these things, amonkie. Very nice job...

Excellent work.
I am impressed by your use of gradient.
How do you go about getting the image/pattern on to the material?

I love doing cross stitches

Have you ever tried any where the image isn't printed on the material? They're pretty frustrating....

You've done great work with those. Should start mass producing them in your free time and sell em, you'd make good money

Av, The only one where the image was printed was on the baby blanket, hence it being my start.

All the others are counted cross stitch. And yup, it's TONS of fun to find out I was too tired and not paying attention, and have to go back and figure what the heck I did wrong.

For those of you who don't know, here's what a thread chart looks like:

Each color or symbol corresponds to a specific color of thread and specific style of stitch. Just find the middle, pick a direction, and go from there.

I'm even more impressed now That horse one would have drove me insane. I've only done small pieces that were counted cross stitch. Everything else had a pattern.

The tree with the big tits stole the show. I'm also particularly fond of the flower and footprints stitch. They both show great use of color.

Really nice looking work there Amonkie! Lots of work interpreting the chart.. I think I'd lose patience with it about 1/2 hour into it.

Very nice. Keep up the good work!!

those are great!!! Like you my only "artistic" talent is with a needle. Im a mad quilter. I started doing it in my early 20's. My grandmother was the type that made you a quilt for every occasion, marriages, births, deaths etc. The very first quilt I ever did was a double wedding ring (hand pieced), I thought I was going to commit suicide before it was done

I managed to finish it in time for christmas (took me almost a year to complete it...it was a king size quilt) but when I gave it to her it was all worth it. I asked her several years later if she would will it to me (I've never kept a quilt that I made..they were always for someone else) and she told me no...she intended to be buried with it....kinda hard to argue with an honor like that

I know how it feels to be giving them away - I gave away a few designs I made specifically as christmas gifts with the person in mind, but I've only made one that I gave away after I saw the look on someone's face as it reminded them of a puppy they no longer had. That was going to a much better place than sitting in my drawer. It's just so hard to go "yup, here ya go" after SO much time, sore fingers, pricked/bleeding, without making sure the reciever knows how much of a gift you're giving them.

Ya know, that is a cool idea. If people sent me scraps of fabric maybe with a little bit on why it was something they wanted to include, I could put it together with a TFP in the middle and see what happens.
