The economic impact of the tsunami in Japan
 

I work at a ford dealer and i was informed today that some of the parts and paint colors are made in japan. ie.. black, and some color reds. they told me that some of the mass air flow sensors are made next to the neuclear plant and ford is building cars and pushing them outside until the sensors can be produced. wondering how many of you this is effecting

The fallout of the disaster is having a significant impact on local production here in Ontario. The provincial economy is largely driven by auto manufacturing.

i would hate to have a toyota prius. cause those are the only yotas that are all made in japan

I'm sure that they will be made somewhere else once they can move the factory. Or they will just outsource the part production.

All those things take time, which means that scarcity of parts will happen driving prices up in the short term. An outsourced production facility will take time to ramp up production which also takes time.

In the short term, there is a good impact financially to the consumer.

now after another quake, i think it makes it all worse.

One of our Japanese manufacturers had a production standstill for a month and was heavily rationing the amount of products each distributor could sell. Business being the way it is we had no choice but to search for an alternative manufacturer and supply them to our customers instead.

The end result: same quality product at a somewhat higher price.
