A Scanner Darkly

Wow!

If you saw a Waking Life and dug that movie, and also enjoy scifi - you should immediately see this movie called "A Scanner Darkly". I finally got a chance to see the movie (difficult, because almost no movie theatres in Alabama showed it).

Basically, it is about an agent (Keanu Reeves) who is investigating a drug called Substance D. This drug causes schizophrenia-like symptoms and is very addictive. He has a weird suit, that prevents people and scanners from detecting who he really is - as does all the people at his agency. The movie was filmed with the roto-scoping technique of A Waking Life, where the film is turned into a cartoon via computer tech.

Really, this movie blew my mind - now I really want to read the Phillip K. Dick book that this was based from.

I REALLY wanted to see this film. But due to both time issues and the fact that there was no theatre relatively near me that was showing it, I missed out.

Does anyone know when this comes out on DVD?

It was a pretty good movie. The ending felt a little weak to me and a lot of the movie dragged, but over all it was pretty good.

It wasn't nearly as good as the book (which has been the case with every PKD adaptation thus far) but I felt like it blew the pants off of Blade Runner and Minority Report and was by far the most accurate adaptation to date.

With the cast of such good and well known actors I was expecting a bit more of the release but with the bad reviews and the often off-putting maze like complexity that comes along with PKD's works it's understandable why it was only in a few theatres.

...I felt it was incredible and I can't wait for it to come out on DVD...

DvD is supposed to be out in december I'm pretty sure...
theres a screener floatin around on the net...

I liked it... definently not as good as the book but pretty good anyways.

I thought the animation was pretty neet most of the time... but a couple times it was distracting from the rest of the movie.

and In both the book and the movie I loved the conversation about the bike gears... always cracks me up.

That and the paranoid scene in which they all return home from driving around to find Barris' surveillance system....all too often that movie reminded me of my own personal moments of just being too neurotic or high to think straight.

Loved it.

I don't think the animation was as tight as "Waking Life", but maybe that's just the SUBSTANCE D...

I do wish they would've covered more about New Path though, and games!
