DVDs you can't have

because they don't exist. Example:

I could get a DVD of Legend (Ridley Scott, 1985) if I wanted - but I really don't want to. Why? Because the version available to me has the wrong score and no special features. The one I want has music by Tangerine Dream, a behind the scenes making-of documentary (in which we see Tom Cruise joking about with the crew, getting balled out by Ridley, fucking up his lines etc), an earnest director's commentary and a retrospective in which those involved in the creation of the film (including Cruise) speak candidly about their experiences.

This is not going to happen. My guesses about behind the scenes will have to remain just that: pure speculation. I'll also not find out anything about how such amazing sets were achieved. It's been probably 25 years now since what I see in Legend actually happened and I have to face up to the fact that I'm probably not ever going to know any more than I do now. It will forever remain obscured, a secret - which saddens me. I just have to keep watching the 10-year old taped-off-TV VHS copy I have which wears out a little each time I watch it (but which at least has the right music).

There's really not a hope in hell of a Legend special edition as I envisaged - it's been too long, the film isn't highly enough regarded and it seems there was too much complicated harranging with the studio during post production.

So my question is: What do you really really want on a DVD, but can't have, because it doen't exist and is never likely to?

There were a whole bunch of classic Doctor Who episodes starring Patrick Troughton (Doc#2) that had their Master tapes COPIED OVER by the BBC back in the day.

I'd like to see more of his work.

Remastered DVDs of Blakes 7 have yet to be released in Region 1 format or sold here for reasonable prices. I suppose there are ways and means but still...

That was good. I think that I saw that on TV. Pretty gritty as I recall.

Well this is your lucky day! Because there is
Legend (Ultimate Edition) Legend (Ultimate Edition)
. It's a two disc set that has BOTH versions included. It also has a fairly extensive BTS documentary (no, Tommy and his ego aren't in it, but all the other major players are). It also has lost scenes, storyboards, trailers, tv spots, photo galleries, production notes, a Brian Ferry video, as well as the uncut/unedited version of the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.

Now, a DVD I want to see happen is Max Headroom. Both the movie and the series.

I would love to have an original copy of the Fist of the North Star DVD released in the mid to late 90's. It has been discontinued and all of the copies that show up on ebay and amazon go for an arm and a leg, and the rest are chinese bootlegs. While its not the finest example of anime artistry, it was the first anime I ever watched (way back in Jr High), so it holds a bit of nostalgia for me. Anywho, with so many state side anime distributors going belly up lately, I doubt this will ever get a re-release.

as for my completely non-existent DVD wishlist:

seasons 2-infinity of Firefly
the extra special edition of Return of the King, with the Scouring of the Shire scenes included
complete Berserk series DVD, not one that stops just when the manga gets going
a Superman Movie that doesn't suck
and a DVD documentary covering what the hell happened to the last 2 Matrix movies

I'd also like the entire series of "Bill Nye, the Science Guy." All I can find now are separate episodes, or a few episodes with the same theme. I want the old TV series!

Also, the Wonder Years. Entire series, with commentaries by the actors and some special behind-the-scenes stuff. That would rock.

Oh, and the State! Remember that one?

There is a Tom Waits film called Big Time that I just found out about a few weeks ago and it is not available on dvd.

Plus, Erich von Stroheim's Greed. I have a vhs copy, and no working VCR. But it really needs to be released on dvd, it's a phenomenon not only because it is a great film (one of the greatest), but the story behind the making of it is even more dramatic than the story portrayed in the film itself.

Not trying to advocate any kind of behavior here, but there are many Bit Torrent web sites out there that probably have all of the above. Some more obscure titles, and especially digitized VHS, might not be of the best quality, but better than nothing. (Moderators, if this post is out of line, just nuke it. Thanks!)

loved that one, one of the few decent things to ever be on MTV. By the way, there is a DVD set of these in existence, but MTV has been holding them hostage for a year for some unknown reason. Guess it has tons of extras, should be great if it ever sees the light of day.

I forgot one.

Ken Park - not because it's a good movie or I need to see it again, because neither are the case. I just want it because I can't have it. The only copies I know about are the bootleg Russian copies, and they work, but I'd much rather be able to see the film the way it was meant to be seen.

Just remembered one more:
The Brave - even though I heard it's a crap movie, the premise sounds interesting, and again I can't see it so I want to. Plus the fact that it's Depp's directorial debut doesn't hurt the "I want to see it" factor.

Greed is not one of the films that often makes it on 'greatest film' lists, but I think that mostly has to do with its relative obscurity. That and the fact that it is a silent film and silent films tend to be a token choice on film lists most often appointed to Cecil B. DeMille classics, such as Birth of a Nation.

Greed was a film based on a novel by naturalist writer Frank Norris (the same author who wrote the book that was the basis for There Will Be Blood). And what makes it great is the prophetic vision and sheer artistry of German filmmaker Erich von Stroheim (the archetype of maniacal film directors that lives on to this day, far beyond his own infamy).

The greatest challenge of watching Greed is primarily a tolerance for silent films, many people can't get past the perceived labor of watching one, but if you can get past it you will find a film that was far beyond its time both technically and thematically. No. 1, this was the first narrative film to be shot primarily on location (in San Francisco and Death Valley) and No. 2, it broke from the (then) traditional framework of storytelling by having no heroes or villains, but rather by telling a story about how heroes (or, at least, normal likeable people) can become paranoid, ruthless and bitter, even murderous, by the sudden appearance in their lives of a great sum of money - the story revolves around a trio of friends who are divided and destroyed by the winning of a lottery.

I'm really tired and not up to writing more right now, but it also bears mentioning that Stroheim went quite mad while making this film, most notably during the filming of its final scenes in Death Valley. There is a lot of existing material concerning this story, and I am certain there must be a wiki entry on it. Stroheim's first cut of this film was 8 hours long, and only under intense pressure from his studio did he manage to cut the film down to the 2 1/2 hours or so that is the only known version that is still existing (the version I have). And it nearly killed him.

So not only is it a superb film with fantastic camera work and superbly effective acting performances, it truly has a backstory of near mythical proportions (for the film industry). I've been waiting for years for a version to be released on DVD. I have no idea why it is not. It's perplexing.

---------- Post added at 11:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:36 PM ----------

I knew there had to be a wiki article on it, but it's not a very good one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greed_(film)

---------- Post added at 11:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:43 PM ----------

And this claims that the first cut was 10 hours long, but I have always heard eight...

---------- Post added at 11:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:47 PM ----------

...and I just pulled out my video copy to see and the back cover says the original version was eight hours...

I want all the seasons of Tour of Duty with the original music intact. Apparently due to licensing costs, they replaced all the 60's rock songs used in the original series (including the theme song, which was Paint it, Black by The Stones) with genberic guitar noodling. It's pretty awful. My dad and I watched that show every time it came on, but the DVD release is, while watchable, not very good.

I'd like to see CBS ink the deal with the musical acts to get Cold Case seasons out on DVD. Unreal for a tv series to be in to season 6 already and not have seasons out on DVD.

Probably has more to do with not getting arrested

I wish Chicago Hope and Picket Fences would come out on DVD. I never really liked ER, but Chicago Hope was a fun show with some great cast members. Picket Fences was bizarre for its time, and I probably only understood half of it since it aired when I was a kid. In fact, I was so young I don't think it even registered to me when the show aired the first female to female television kiss.

I wish they'd settle whatever disagreement there is over the rights and release these shows.
