Jim Carrey to Star in 'The Six Million Dollar Man'

Based on the Popular 70's TV show THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN

Published: Wednesday, October 22, 2003
HOLLYWOOD -- "The Six Million Dollar Man" is up and running. The project, long in development, was put on the fast track after the studio met with superstar Jim Carrey, fresh off the over $470 million dollar worldwide gross of "Bruce Almighty," and set the actor up with writer/director Todd Phillips. The combination of Carrey and Phillips led to a fresh, hilarious take on the potential franchise.

"The Six Million Dollar Man" will be written and directed by Phillips who has co-written and directed the blockbuster comedies "Road Trip," "Old School" and the upcoming "Starsky and Hutch."

"The teaming of Jim and Todd is the perfect creative combination to launch the 'Six Million Dollar Man' franchise," said Dimension Co-Chairman Bob Weinstein. "Todd is a director with proven instincts and Jim is a superstar."

Dimension Films and Universal Pictures will co-finance. Dimension will be the lead studio on the film with Andrew Rona and Brad Weston, Co-Presidents of Dimension, overseeing with Mary Parent, President of Production overseeing for Universal Pictures.

Michael Zoumas, SVP Production and Development will also work on the film for Dimension.

Phillips is currently completing production on the comedy "Starsky & Hutch," starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Snoop Dogg, which is a Warner Brothers/Dimension Co-Production. The studio has an overall deal with Phillips and has several projects in development including, "School for Scoundrels," which he and Scot Armstrong are currently drafting. As soon as the duo completes the script for "Scoundrels," Phillips will begin working on "Six Million Dollar Man."

Scott Budnick, VP of Production, will supervise development for Phillips' Gentlemen Pictures, which has a first look deal with Dimension.

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin along with Scott Faye of Collision are attached to produce the film. Scott Cherrin will co-produce.

"The Six Million Dollar Man" will be based on the popular 70's TV show THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. The show, which starred Lee Majors as Astronaut, Cornel Steve Austin, followed the adventures of government agent who was half man, half machine as he solved crimes across the globe. The show was based on the novel CYBORG: A NOVEL by Martin Caidin.

Jimmy Miller and Eric Gold of Mosaic Media had the idea of taking the existing franchise, previously owned by Dimension and Universal Pictures, and teaming their original comedy idea with Jim Carrey and Dimension.

Carrey was repped by Eric Gold and Jimmy Miller at Mosaic Media, Nick Stevens at UTA and attorney Debra Klein. Andrew Gumpert, EVP of business and legal affairs, negotiated on behalf of Dimension. Phillips was repped by attorney Warren Dern of Offer, Weber & Dern and Todd Feldman at WMA.

I watched a bit of the Six Million Dollar Man show when I was real young, so maybe my memory of the show is hazy, but the show definately wasn't a comedy, right? It was purely an action show, as I remember it. So I don't see where they're going with this. I mean, it's not like they're making a spoof of the show.... right? So how does Jim Carrey fit into this? If this isn't a spoof, then what the hell is he doing starring in it?

I'm an 80's kid, so maybe someone else could shed some light as to whether there's any credence to having Jim Carrey be the lead...

Okay, Jim Carrey, the guy that talked out of his ass in Ace Ventura, is going to play the same character that Lee Majors played in the 80s?!

I barely remember the show, but I don't think Carrey is the type of person to carry on the persona of the Six Million Dollar Man.

Of course the could give him a new character with bionics thats goofy and call him the 6 million dollar man but would kill the idea behind the old show. And isn't a new TV. Show already doing this of sorts (I'm talking about Jake 2.0 and it uses nano-bots instead of bionics)

As a spoof? Think about it, Jim doing a jump in slow-motion while his face contorts and contracts as the famous million-dollar sound plays... Priceless.

Well, maybe, but I have a bad feeling that the novelty of stuff like that would wear off pretty quick. I'd rather the movie be more action oriented. Action movies can still be funny, but an action movie that's "Jim Carrey" funny? .... meh.

Besides all that about Carrey, wouldn't they need to call it The Six-Billion Dollar Man now?
'Cause, a dollar don't buy as much electronics as it used to.

More retro-ironic TV plundering?
Charlie's Angels wasn't exactly comedic, but now it's a kind of campy franchise.
What's next? A dramatic goth re-interpretation of Bewitched?

BTW, They ARE doing Bewitched.

And they will screw SMDM up, if they make it a comedy.
I grew up with this shit...it was an awesome show.
Jim Carey shouldn't be the one doing this.

Starkey & Hutch shouldn't be a comedy either.

And yes, it should be calls the six billion dollar man
or at least the SIXTY million dollar man.

I'm hoping it is a comedy. Can you imagine how bad it would be if Jim Carrey has decided to make a try at "action hero"?

I will go to my grave saying that Jim Carrey can do almost anything. I loved "man in the moon," and the next one he is doing "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is going to be wonderful. IMO

ok- in the article they say comedy- and while carrey can do anything, I fear he will botch it like he did the riddler- it could be done neat, but i cant see it as a comedy

So did my brother. It was fun looking through his head at different objects and pretending you could see a long distance.
It was fun taking his arm plate off and looking at his bionics, too.

I had an Evel Knievel action figure with one of those wind-up motorcycles and we would get Col. Austin and Evel on the back and see which one could make it down the hallway the farthest without falling off. (ahhh, good times)

That wasn't his fault, blame Joel Schmuckarse for that... Tommy Lee Jones could have played a brilliant Harvey Dent, cold, calculated and menacing but no, Joel said "More laughter! It makes you look insane! None of that deep, disturbed and angry business!"

I loved Carey in The Majestic and no matter how many times I watch Ace Ventura (part 1) I still laugh my socks off.

Carrey is a pretty impressive actor -- I'm sure he will be able to pull off whatever the writers/director ask him to do. How they decide to portray the character, though, is another story..

I would have loved to see a real remake of the Six Million Dollar Man. Instead we will get a stupid comedy capitalizing on the shows name.

kind of ironic that the movie/show is the "Six Million Dollar Man" and Jim Carrey is the "Twenti-Six Million Dollar Man" (amount it costs to have him act in a hollywood movie).. heheh...
