In The Movies...

Ya know in the movies how there'll be a scene where the good guy and bad guy, who have been trying to kill each other for awhile now, suddenly find themselves mere feet away from each other, both holding a gun aimed at the others face?

Why do they always just stand there staring each other down? Why doesn't one of them just fucking shoot already and win?

It's even worse when they start talking to each other. WTF?

Also, you ever notice how all those epic battle movies, particularly the ones about the 13th thru 16th centuries have these really really small armies totally annihilating the evil but massively larger army? Think Braveheart, or the recent knock-off King Arthur. It's almost like throughout history, the smaller your army, the more likely you are to win. What's up with that?

Dramatic effect my friend...... The real version of most of those situations would not last long and be less interesting. Case in point, the show COPS is cool, but if they made a movie that was just like that show, would you pay $10 to see it?

To answer your question; Smaller forces are many times A) better equiped B) better trained C) easier to keep together. Also, imagine you have 100 guys vs 500. Only the guys on the front line can fight. They have swords, remember? Case and point, the spartans vs the persians. Battle of Thermopole(sp).

And don't compare King Arthur to Braveheart. That's horrible. Braveheart rules, King Arthur was a piece of monkey poo.

This really made me think of Face/Off, where Cage and Travolta are in the place with mirrors after the bust on the apartment. And yours is a really good question... I don't think it makes tons of sense either, but I guess the movie makers explanation would be something along the lines of, 'After years of persuing each other, they want to finally understand each others motivation and thoughts before the bad guy is brought to justice.' or some crap like that.
