1. Ray Davies (been digging the Kinks lately, Waterloo Sunset, check it out)

3. Probably Elvis Costello.

I love Dylan, but (even though it's his claim to fame) I don't really consider him a good "songwriter" because his tunes don't translate well to other artists performing them (IMO, of course). Dylan is definitely the best writer of Dylan songs, though ;-)

Prince - redefined our expectations of music
Chuck D., Zack de la Rocha - made music socially relevant again
David Bowie - made music wonderfully confusing
Morrisey, Leonard Cohen - made music wonderfully depressing

Currently enjoy lyrically The Shins, Dashboard Confessional - and Marilyn Manson gives as good a middle finger as anyone out there today...
