Master Cheffing SIMPLE and CHEAP meals - recipe thread

The point of this thread is to post meals that you yourself have made.

Meals that are simple (someone with basic skills can make)

Ingredients that are cheap, easy to get hold of.

Let me start by explaining how I Masterchef my own Shepherds Pie


1, Start of by boiling some water. Once its boiling put in one BIG white potato (cut it up in pieces and it will boil quicker)

2, After 5 mins add one sweet potato in with the big potato

3, Get a frying pan and start to cook up a small onion (sliced) and a segment of garlic (sliced). Once its going and the pan is slippy, add some lamb mince (300 grammes or 400 grammes pack is about right). You want to do this at a nice heat but not so its spitting

4, Get another pan and boil or steam one carrot

5, Before your mince is ready, make up say 1/4 pint of instant gravy. Just use Bisto granuales or whatever. If you want to make some fancy middle class gravy - stop being a snob and just use instant.

6, You want to time this nicely, but if one thing is ready before the others it isnt a big deal. Get your oven pre-heating to 220 C

7, Once your carrot is boiled, just leave to one side

8, When the mince is done mix up with the gravy and leave on very low heat

9, Once your potato is done, mash it up with a very small amount (like one glug) milk and about 1/2 tsp of mint (chopped and dried is fine)

10, Now, get a oven proof dish. Put your mince/onion/ gravy on the bottom. Pour the drained carrots on top

11, Now spread the mash over the top. You want to do this nice and rough like, but so you can't see any mince peeking through the top

12, Sprinkle a little more of the mint on the top. JUST DO IT!

13, Have the whole lot in the oven for 20 mins

14, Its ready. Really beautiful. Let it cool now. The amounts I measured are right for a good & really filling meal for two people. Have a couple of slices of nice wholemeal bread with ot if your really hungry

In summary, the ingredients are

1 sweet potato
1 big white potato
300ml or 400 ml minced lamb (if you like have beef instead and call it cottage pie)
a small amount of milk
a small amount of mint
some instant gravy granules
1 carrot
1 small onion (a white onion)
1 segment of garlic

I have personally made this for myself and for myself and another person on multiple times.

I made the recipe up myself, and I can give it my seal of approval

It doesnt look fancy, but it is wholesome, really good, really filling. It probably aint diet food, but its better for you than a pizza or a cheese burger, aint it?
