Tim Hortons Trick

Reading the thread regarding bad Tim Hortons coffee I thought I would share a trick with some of you guys.

As most of you guys know Timmys throws out all of their baked good usually between the hours of 12am and 2am depending on the location.

If you time it right you can get there just as they are throwing out thier foods. Now you might think, "Who cares?" well because most of it is only an hour or max 4 hours old and they are throwing it away.

If you order food as they are throwing it away 90% of the places will give you whatever you want pretty much for nothing.

For example last night I got 48 muffins, a dozen donuts, 61 cookies, 8 croussants and about 100 timbits for $10. Now I told them that I didnt want the Timbits or the croussants because I didnt want to eat them so they tossed those.

Now tell me how its possible to get about $250 worth of food from Timmys for $10 any other way? Let just say my friends who were with me that night at Timmys and my roommates were very happy I made the purchase. Its been a day and we still have so many of them left and will most likely end up throwing them out, but free food is free food.

Nice idea - but I don't think my wife would be too happy for me to be going to Canada at midnight to get cheap muffins.

However - if you want to stop by my place next time you go, I'll have a couple.

It's true. I did order dozen dounts and paid 2 bucks for it. The coffee was free and it was about 3 in the morning when that happened.

The first thought that came to my mind was, "who the hell wants it anyway"

I go Tim Horton's and it's a crap shoot whether or not my apple fritter will be fresh, or would make a suitable replacement for a brick on a construction site at the best of times.

who the hell wants it anyway answer: Poor people, or people with no food would take it with a second thought. Places that throw out food really need a setup to donate it to the less fortunate. It really disgusts me when I hear about places throwing out good food when there are people out there with no food.

There has been stories about how people get sick from the donated food and ended up sueing the company that donated the free food. Companies would rather waste the food rather than get sued.

KFC stores in Ottawa apparently sends food to soup kitchens for next-day lunch.

'course, given that it is KFC, it is assumed to be poisonous. :)

They used to do this. I know first hand, being a cook at a shelter in Ottawa. I used to serve KFC every Saturday.
Apparently, now they use their leftover chicken for a chicken salad or something.
Think about that for a second. If you order a KFC chicken salad, you're getting recycled chicken that would have been given away for free (or maybe a tax credit).

Tim Horton's used to give us day-old stuff too. I haven't gotten any answers as to why they don't anymore though.

Q: What do you do with the hundreds of dollars of pastries, OP? Either you feed all your friends or you are unbelievably huge, one of the two!!!

We ended up throwing out most of the cookies and about 1/2 of the muffins. I had them stacked in the boxes on the table and the box on the bottom got squished.

If there were any homeless people around I would of had no problem hooking them up with as much free food as they wanted. Ive been known to take homeless people into restaurants and get them food. Im banned from Pita Factory in Waterloo Ontario for doing such a thing.

Some homeless guy asked me for money I said I didnt have cash on me but I would get him something to eat if he wanted. So we went into Pita Factory. I ordered a bottle of water and said "And whatever this guy wants is on me aswell". The manager flipped out and told me what I was doing was wrong. I said Im a customer and so is he so make him his Pita.

The homeless guy was like "Oh good afternoon sir. May I please have a BLT Pita with extra cheese, extra bacon, and double veggies, a chocolate milk, an orange juice, a large bottle of water, and a cookie?" I was like "DAMN!" It cost me like $15 for this homeless man's meal, I was told to never come back to that store again, but it was all worth it for the smile on his face.

Baaaa... doesn't work like that here. I had to meet a buddy at Timmy's at 4am when leaving for a trip south. He bought a coffee and donut and as soon as he paid but before i ordered the gal chucked the whole tray of donuts out!

It kind of feels like seeing the gas price change lower as you leave the station.

There are a couple kiosk style TH at the University I attend. One is closed 2 hours earlier than the other and it sends all of its baked good over. I don't know what happens to them when #2 closes.

But if you happen to show up around 5:55 and know the names of the girls that work at #1, they'll give you a free cup of the coffee instead of pouring it out.

actually there are very stringent rules about this. There are companies like Cityharvest who pick up left over catering etc, but because homeless and hungry are people they also attract lawyers and there's the potential for lawsuits. I see lots of food tossed away but again it's a shame.

Also, the companies have to keep a standard for their foodstuffs. Even if it's not fit for sale, it means it also isn't fit for represntation of their brand name.

The same happened to me when I lived in Ohio, I went to the homeless shelter and gave them the over hundred donuts I got....

yeah... I'm laughing insanely too

vanblah 11-28-2006 07:51 PM

When I was very poor I'd wait outside most bakeries etc for them to throw the food away and go dumpster diving. I know it sounds gross, but when you're hungry you'll do a lot of weird stuff. Most of the food is wrapped in plastic anyway.
