Canadian herosim...

March 11, 2005 – Six fire victims in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan were rescued Thursday, March 3 thanks to teamwork between two IAFF Canadian locals – Saskatoon Local 80 and Saskatoon Ambulance Local 3270.

"We had a report that three children were inside the burning house," says Bruce Siemens, president of Local 80. "Luckily, our crews were able to get out there in less than two and a half minutes. The mother was waiting outside and was able to tell our guys that her kids were on the second floor."

Wasting no time, Local 80 fire fighters immediately started a search and rescue effort using ladders to attack the outside and fire fighters with hose lines to attack the inside. Quickly, the fire fighters were able to reach the second floor.

The crew located three children in the bedrooms and an adult male in the basement. A 14-year-old boy who was also in the house escaped on his own.

As each victim was removed from the home, paramedics from Local 3270 took over. "Due to the work of the emergency teams, we were able to give the patients a chance of survival," says Troy Davies, public information officer for Local 3270. "We had four patients in full arrest, but were able to get all of their hearts beating again. That’s amazing."

All of the victims were transported to the hospital in various conditions. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but arson has been ruled out.

SASKATOON – A Saskatoon mother who lost one of her children in a house fire earlier this month is angry with the landlord who was responsible for checking her smoke alarms.

Fire at this house killed a three-year-old girl
Jennifer Bowron left her hospital bed Monday to speak with reporters and thank the people of Saskatoon for all the support and concern they have shown the family. But she's also angry with landlord Jack Grover, who has been charged with falsifying smoke detector records.

The morning of March 3 is one that Bowron will never forget.

Fire broke out at the two-storey rental home at 214 Ave. E North just before 9 a.m.

Bowron woke up choking from the smoke that had invaded her bedroom.

"All I could see was smoke and I remember going down the stairs, going out a window and off a balcony and right onto the ground...and then going to my neighbours to call the cops," she said.

Bowron's three-year-old daughter Isabelle died last week. Another daughter, eight-month-old Jordynn is still in a coma. Eighteen-month-old William is out of intensive care but is expected to remain in hospital indefinitely.

A friend of the family, Curtis Gifford, is in critical but stable condition.

Bowron said Grover never checked the two smoke alarms to make sure they were working. The alarms did not go off when the fire started, she said.

"I'm very angry at him that he didn't do his part as a landlord and make sure everything worked," she said.

Grover did not speak with reporters when he made his first court appearance last week.

Bowron also criticized the provincial government for not providing adequate income assistance to her family.

We don't pay those people for what they do, we pay them for what they MIGHT HAVE TO DO.

Good work, guys.

Not only did Grover not talk to reporters, he had his hired goon assault one of the newspaper guys. Real stand-up guy if you ask me.

I think there is a new level of hell reserved for slum lords. The only punishment? You have to live in your worst building for eternity. Wake up call, you blood-sucking leeches!
