RPG Makers/Editors

Hey guys. Was wondering if anyone could recomend a decent editor or maker to create my own rpg setting/game.

I know that Neverwinter Nights has one...though I've never tried it. Any others out there?

Neverwinter Nights is the only one that I know of. My brother actually just went to school to become a game developer, and during the early part of his schooling they actually highly recommended that they go out and get NWN and play around with the editor. So its probably one of the best out there.

There's some PS2 RPG makers. I've created an RPG map in warcraft 3's map editor as well.

I know little about the editors, but from what I've seen, the Neverwinter Nights 2 editor is completely different compared to the first version. It's true 3D, and it's more than just placeables, you have a multitude of options for designing landscapes. I've seen some absolutely gorgeous results. I've even seen the Black Gate of Mordor recreated in it. I've seen areas where I'd think, "Hey, I'd like to go there for a walk in real life. This is nice." But then you add on the world of AD&D 3.5 rules. Wo0t!

There are several problems with NWN2. Well, at least there were at release. They've patched it up a bunch, but I'm not sure what's still buggy. NWN2 is generally a resource hog, but if you have a good machine I wouldn't worry about it.

If you're just getting into this sort of thing, you might want to start with the simpler NWN. Plus, I'm sure you could get it with all the expansions for under $50. You might not want to go out of your mind trying to figure out 3D meshes.

I've seen some amazing settings created with both versions of the game.

Spiderweb's Software (www.Spidweb.com, PC & Mac) Blades of Exile and Blades of Avernum are two fine examples of RPGs that come with fully-functioning editors.

You can check out RPGMaker XP or RPGMaker VX if you specifically want to make an RPG that doesn't depend on another game to run (Like the NWN Aurora Toolset).

I would honestly recommend Game Maker though, it seems to allow a lot of freedom in creating the type of game you want to make, and it doesn't cost much to upgrade to the "pro" version. It's possible to create pretty much any genre of game using Game Maker. Multimedia Fusion 2 is pretty good too.
