Am I the only one....

I have a slight problem with current FPS games, specifically Battlefield: 1942. This game is very popular - but to be honest I don't quite get it.

My main gripes comes down to vehicles.

Vehicles are being placed in more and more FPS games, and it seems to me that vehicles are one of the main appeals of BF:1942.

But for me, especially for WWII games, I want a more intimate experience. I want to be down with the nitty gritty foot soldiers. I want close quarter combat - fast paced yet also tactical. Steaming around in a tank or diving in and out in a plane is fun, yes, but they have simulation/war games for that.

BF:1942 still delivers a fun time, and being infantry is still fun of course - but I find the likes of Day and Defeat or Enemy Territory much more stimulating, more suspensful, and more true to the genre.

Is anyone else slightly concerned with the emphasis being placed on vehicles in our FPS games?

I like the vehicles, and I think that was one of the main appeals of the Tribes series, but I also like the infantry combat. There are plenty of games with each, and i dont think one is forcing the other to be obsolete. It is nice to have variety.
I dont like the choppyness of BF1942, thats all.

I was under the impression that Battlefield 1942 WAS a war game. Based after that one war that happened... oh, what was it... World War II.

You should try out the new Call of Duty demo if you really want intensity. I though BF1942 was great but it didn't feel like an authentic WW2 experience.

battlefield is designed for large open warfare, ie vehicles are sometimes needed to get to the fight in a resonable time

I was under the impression that Battlefield 1942 was a FPS based on WW2. Being based on a war doesn't make something a wargame.

Actually I cite wargame incorrectly. As a genre wargames I believe are a specific type strategy games, mostly turn based I think. Now, when I said simulation/war game, I mispoke as I said. A simulation is pilot sims etc, only i wanted to place emphasis on dogfights or panzer tank combat. There are games based excusively on the control of either tanks or planes in WW2.

Thats really irrelevent though. Thanks for your sarcastic response, I appreciate it really...

The Call of Duty demo was very fun. I will likely be getting the game now.

I like BF1942 to a degree, but I agree JcL. Vehicles - from this game to the upcoming HL2 and Halo2 - just seem to be the flavor of the month. I suspect they'll be all over gaming for another year or two, then fade somewhat.

If I'm playing a game that's predominantly a shooter, I dont want to worry about steering too much. I'd rather play something like Interstate 76, which is all about driving/shooting.

As for Call of Duty, definitely get the demo. And I've played a few additional levels during one-on-ones with the developer and publisher. It's an amazing game!

Ya know, you can play the "Day 2, Day 3" etc. maps for Battlefield that don't have certain types of vehicles or limits their availability. I know that this makes the game much funner in some maps and a hell of a lot more realistic. I take that realism is what you want, sort of like Medal of Honor. Try those maps out, maybe you'll enjoy them!

Yeah, call of duty was incredible, cant wait for it to come out. I think if you want the "true FPS" of things like ET or CS in BF1942, you have to get into clan play. Matches are so intense, and it brings a whole new meaning to the whole game. Theyre played 12v12, but there is mad strategy involved. Even in vehicles, sometimes youre more helpless than the "down in the dirt" foot soldiers.
