Low on Grafix, but High on gameplay...?
Seeing that 'Nethack' post made me think of it...
Does anyone else other than me have a favorite 'Deep game/crummy graphics' favorites out there? In other words, the graphics and look of the game are not great... but the game is redeemed by fun/deep/engaging gameplay Examples include: Text based adventures XYZZY News Roguelikes Nethack Angband Slash'em A.D.O.M. DECKER Space 4X games Space Empires IV VGA Planets Fantasy 4X games Dominions & Dominions II Tank games Scorched Earth Pocket Tanks Other Starcontrol 2 Starcontrol: Timewarp Those are all I can think of off the top of my head.... ...any others you might hold dear?

Just for reference, they have some people converting Star Control 2 over to a windows based platform. They're keeping the old-style graphics but adding a few things like voiceover for the dialog. It's going to be pretty nice when they finish.
The best part is that it's free :-) Here's the link http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

I have a weakness for Atari's Combat. It had neither the graphics nor the deep gameplay, but that's a damn good game to have with a group of people. I can sit there for an afternoon shooting around corners at tanks or flying my biplane in circles blasting at friends.

Shockwave and Shockwave II on the 3DO - although I kinda liked the graphics also. Let's not forget Bomberman on the Saturn - 10 player fun! I used to have huge gatherings at my house and we'd play it all night long!

Every NES game and some Atari games. Love them so much. Oh and games like Final Fantasy 4 on the SNES and Lunar, the Silver Star Story for the PSX. Gampelay always beats graphics.
