I always like the RPG where you played Marvel super heroes. There was this other one I think was called Rune Quest (or something close). I wish PNP RPG was still popular, that was fun to use the old imagination.

Hmm. Fluff first, then Crunch.
PC - BGII for modern, Wasteland for classic. Console - GTA3 With the unimportant stuff outta the way... I am a PnP RPG nut. Currently in passionate lust with - "Adventure!" by White Wolf. It rocks so damn hard. Best thing they've put out, hands down. Lusting from afar - Mage. (Played in one friggin Mage game since I got a pre-release copy of First Ed. No one locally has the horsepower to run it, dammitall.) Beergoggling towards - Heroes Unlimited, TMNT, Rifts and all the rest of those Palladium games that I secretly dig but won't admit it unless I'm drunk. Love it like my Grandma - D&D, of course. It's the Gateway Drug that got us all into PnP. The "One book that I must have if I'm stuck on a desert island" - Hero System 5th Ed and a crap-tonne of d6's. Hero can do anything, and do it right. -- I am finishing a D&D 3E game set in Sword and Sorcery's (that's White Wolf) Scarred Lands setting. Best setting I've seen for D&D, hands down. Getting ready to run some beer and peanuts type chop-socky jung fu theatre next, using Palladium's Mystic China. Life is Short. Roll High. |

Tabletop: I've done most of it. D&D, Earthdawn, TMNT, Superheroes Unlimited, Shadowrun, on and on. Right now we're big into Deadlands:Wasted West from Pinnacle Entertainment Group. PEG hasn't been doing so well lately, so all the Deadlands stuff is selling for real cheap, good time to get into it. It's post-apocalyptic, with guns and magic and melee. It's the closest I've seen to the spirit of Fallout.
Video game: That's really tough. I've got a soft spot for old school Might&Magic, and the old D&D games, but Fallout 2 was pretty incredible, as was BG2. Black Isle is fucking amazing.

I loved Planescape: Torment. The overall story (and the depth of the dialogue trees) in that game make it better than many highly regarded novels, in my opinion.
It's too bad that the team that made Torment hasn't been able to create another game in its image. I'm not looking for a sequel, mind you, but Baldur's Gate II just wasn't the same kind of game. Maybe Lionheart will be it. Who knows? |

someone mentioned mythus, that game was real good. character generation would take ages..and you really got somebody that felt right. very deadly combat system though.
favourite game would definitely be DnD, have only just start getting into it again. after a few years break ( damn girlfriends ! ). done quite abit of cyberpunk2020, which was also cool. some other games, i played/runned a little...which were fun desperado's/it came from the late late late show/chill/mechwarrior

I think the Class-based vs Skills-based depends on what genre you are running. In fantasy games, where roles are sharply defined by the tenets of the genre, class-based works fine. Most other genres function better in skill/template-based systems, IMO.

Panzer Dragoon Saga for the good ol Sega Saturn. Still hoping they make a true sequel for a next gen system. Yeah, Orta is cool and all, but it was the story that made Saga so great.

What is this Lionheart I hear speakage of? If it's anything like Planescape...That'd be cool...
I mean, you got experience for just asking people things...that makes ...sense! ...And is cool. Oh for a good RPG... And yeah, BGII wasn't anything like it...Though I played Ps:T after. |

Troublebot, the Fallout game that's coming out this fall (Fallout Enforcer) has about as much to do with Fallout 1 and 2 as Starship Troopers the movie had to do with Starship Troopers the book. All of the coverage I've seen indicate that Fallout Enforcer is most definitely NOT an RPG, and is a Fallout game in name only.

I guess since the majority of the games I play are RPG's, it'd be ok for me to post in this thread. Strife only briefly mentioned Xenogears, but failed to mention how truly fraggin' awesome it is. I've yet to see any other RPG with a deeper storyline. Its that what RPG's are about; storyline? You have FPS for mindless entertainment, and RTS if you're feeling in the mood to build an army to kick some ass, but if you wanna sit back and have an awesome story be told to you... well isn't that what RPG's are all about? I also like FF7, FF8 (3rd disk has the best story development), FF9 was ok (Stiltzkin rules!!), and FF10 (my friends says FF3 also kicks ass but I've yet to play it), I've played most of Chrono Trigger and it kicks ass (never had time to really finish it), Chrono Cross (although a bit weaker than Chrono Trigger, still pretty good), Parasite Eve (truly awesome, and finally a female lead!), I bought Parasite Eve 2 recently although I haven't played it yet, uhh... what else. Brave Fencer Musashi kicked too much ass, Tomba and Tomba 2 were pretty good. I'm currently playing Xenosaga Episode 1 and its damn good so far, and Kingdom Hearts is currently on my to-do list (I have the game, just haven't played it yet) Still, I'd have to say that Xenogears pwns all other RPG's.

Gotta agree with Stiltzkin about Xenogears, no other game has sucked up so much of my time and made me like it. My first time through, I lost my save file about 25 hours in, I then put it aside to spend more time with Metal Gear Solid, which I also lost the save file for. Once I got back to where I had left off in Xenogears though, I couldn't stop. I didn't even mind that the second disc is 20 hours of slowly scrolling text and about 2 hours of gameplay.
Dragon Quest 5 + 6 are both excellent, never got to try 7 since my PS would freeze up when i tried to play it. And Final Fantasy Tactics provided me with tons of fun, can't wait for the sequel on GBA. Diablo 2 sucked up a lot of my time too, but I felt more like a Las Vegas slot machine zombie playing it, you know, click on the monsters, get the treasure, it's all crap, sell it, lather, rinse, repeat. |
