RPG Fans- do you name the characters?
I just restarted Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced- and I was was thinking, how many people name the characters ? I mean Marche for instance is the main character i nthis game, but you can anme him whatever. In most RPGS or Final fantasy games for that matter, you have a choice to name the main character or keep the defult game, and my question for you is, which do you do prefer?
Name them? If so what usually eh? |

I always name my own characters, you'd be surprised at my current FF game, it reads like a list of mods on TFP for some reason, hehe.

I used to name the main character in all RPGs - however, now I have stopped doing so for Final Fantasy-type games. Those sorts of games already have protagonists with well-defined characters, and I don't really feel that I get to determine their choices or their personality at all. I still name the characters in open-ended RPGs, though.
I have never named the secondary characters in the party, partly for the same reason and also because I'm not creative enough to come up with that many unique names ;-P |

Given the option I use my own name for the main character. I usually leave the others at their defaults. One of my friends renames all the NPCs the name of his friends, when ever you walk into his room while he's playing you never know who will be on the screen.

In TLoZ: Ocarina of Time I would crack up every time Navi addressed my renamed Link.
It was always, "Shithead, do this..." or "Hey!" "Shithead!" It was very funny, until I took the game to a friend's house and his mother came in to the room.

I always stick w/the default names... and in Zelda am sure to start w/the name Link. I have a hard enough time taking game stories seriously without my little pocket fairy shouting profanities at me.

Heh, in all the old school rpgs for SNES I always named the characters after the people I knew who most closely resembled them, so it was easier to remember. Funny thing, I did it in XCOM to, for anyone who remembers that game. Made saving my soldiers the imperative parameter to all the missions.

I stick with their original names for the most part. I accidentally named Link "John" in Ocarina of Time and whenever Navi pops up and says John it annoys the hell out of me.
In the FF games I'll stick with the original for the reasons already said, they're pre-defined characters and it makes the setting stay how it is more so in my opinion. |

I'll third the notion that it depends on the type of RPG, linear or open ended. Also, it depends on the feeling of the game. For example, FFVII, a linear, emotional, mostly serious game. I stick with the given names. Morrowind, an open RPG, I come up with serious names. Mario RPG... heh. My names for that were so ridiculous, I can't even remember them.
Side note: I've seen the word "ridiculous" spelled "redicilous" so many times on these forums I just typed it like that by accident. Please, for my grammar's sake, spell it right. |

I always, and I mean ALWAYS keep the names.
Ever since the "Who's Cloud?" incident.... met a guy who named Cloud from FF7 "Wolverine"

I fit in with most here.
Open ended games I make a name myself, more linear games with a more direct story line I keep the default name. It just seems more natural that way...

It really depends on the RPG. I usually keep the preset names the first time I play the game through. Although, ever since Secret of Mana, I've named my main character HERO (all caps) half of the time. I get made fun of for that.
I DO remember playing through FFVI and renaming all the characters with my friends' names. The weird character interactions were pretty funny (especially my friend who was lucky enough to be Gau).

I usually keep the original names, but if I know I'm just trying out a game, and not going to finish it, I'll re-name 'em with a profane word like, "Motherfucker," "Asslicker," "Buttbuddy," "Shit eater," etc. Anything in the name of immaturity.

i tried nick naming my pokemon when i was like a 6th grader, but that was way too much for me to remeber so i stopped (i had all 150, i was such a beast ) |

The only RPGs I play are the ones where you HAVE to name your character.

I name them all. Maybe now I don't really think about what I'm naming them as much as when I was younger though. It used to be I would name them after friends or cute girls I knew <dork> or what-have-you, now I just name them Ted or something like that. Or Mac. It's easy.
