Need a new tactical rpg badly

After beating Front Mission 4 (which was agonizingly easy but thoroughly enjoyable), I was left completely without a decent Tactical RPG. I bought Knights of the Old Republic but the fact that you have no actual control over the game killed it for me. Even rudimentary combat controls would have made this one of the best games ever, but there is nothing I hate more that being a spectator to combat. Here is a list of some of my favs. Please suggest something to alleviate my boredom.

Brigandine - One of the greatest RPGs Ive ever played

FF Tactics

Front Mission 4

Shining Force - Havent played the newest ones but this may be the dial-a-attack rpg I can stomach

Ring of Red - Interesting take on tactical rpg

Ive been playing Fable recently and have enjoyed it a lot. RPG elements with some control over the actual combat system or dial-a-attack system with heavy strategic involvement. I prefer the small unit to small unit attacks ala Front Mission to the grand wars and limited controls of Dynasty Warriors but could be persuaded to change my mind for a solid gaming experience.

Games to avoid:

Anything in the Final Fantasy Series - enough is enough

Kessen

Dynasty Warriors series

Romance of the Three Kingdoms series

Many Thanks

You try Fallout Tactics? Coppertop endorses that one heartily.

Okay, my first thought when I read this was "what kind of psycho needs a tactical (rocket propelled grenade) badly"?

What is a tactical role playing game?

Sho Nuff 11-25-2005 06:58 AM

I am in the middle of Jerusalem. A tactical rocket propelled grenade is not out of the question.

Yes I do... as long as you don't expect much RP in the RPG part. But a fun game nonetheless.

I have recently restarted playing Temple of Elemental Evil. It is a turn based RPG that has some distinct tactical elements to it. Another combat-heavy, roleplaying-lite game. Great fun.

Okay, I've got one for you:

This is an older game. However, it's one of the best tactical games I've ever played. It's called X-com and it was only released for DOS. However, if you can find the game online then you can simply use a dos emulator (for windows, I suggest DOSbox... it works like a charm).

I've been playing this game pretty much nonstop for the past two weeks. For me, I'll play this game for like four months straight then do something else, than come back to it. This has happened since it was released in... maybe '94.

Also, Coppertop's icon is an excellent game called Fallout. That game is one beauty of a game, I definitely recommend that one.

Never played fallout but Ive been a huge fan of xcom since the pre-pentium days. Thanks for the nostalgia. Circa 1997.

FngKestrel 11-25-2005 12:23 PM

There's actually three Fallout games worth playing.

Fallout
Fallout Tactics
Fallout 2

Fallout and Fallout 2 are RPGs and Fallout Tactics is a Tactical RPG.

Fallout 1 and 2 are freaking awesome. Pretty old now, but they are super good.

I really enjoyed Disgaea for the PS2,, very much like FF Tactics.. i think the same company released 2 other tactical rpgs afterwards that were also well-reviewed.. you might wanna give it a look..

No game since FFT has been anywhere close to FFT. Long live the greatest game ever!

Also, Shining Force II was the last good ones. After 1 and 2, the series became a giant suckfest. Also, there is the newer x-coms on windows that were kind of fun. And one on the PS.

GoldenOuroboros 11-26-2005 08:03 PM

Similar to an RTS RPG?
Have you tried SpellForce? I quite enjoy that ^_^

Apokx 11-26-2005 08:37 PM

I might suggest Disgaea and the other games that are a part of the series.

I didn't like it much, but that game has so many options it's disgusting.A friend of mine played it for close to 3 months straight because he kept finding new things to do and improve on.

Edit:Graphics are fairly similar to FF Tactics, as well as the hex based combat system.

Apokx: Did he get the Horse Penis? When my friends played Disgaea that was the most amusing item I was around for.

Sho Nuff 11-27-2005 07:02 AM

What manner of game is this?!?

Have you played Front Mission 3? FM3 is so much better than FM4, Its also a lot harder too. You can easily spend over 100 hours with FM3. Theres two main character to pick in the beginning of the game. Then you'll play through that character's perspective. You have to beat the game twice to see everything, its like 2 game in 1. Also the two character get totally different comrade. Great game.

Don't think he did.Seems an item called "Horse Penis" would have been brought up in conversation but it never was, or I've forgotten since then.

I have to suggest Front Mission 3 also. I played FM3 first and thought it was much better than FM4. I dunno what someone who played FM4 first would think about FM3 though..

Fire Emblem for the GBA has been getting some great reviews and I'm looking forward to playing it. It's on my xmas list :)

Sho Nuff 11-28-2005 02:48 AM

Ill definitely check Disgaea and FM3 out. Whats the word on the Shining Force sequals? Im hearing mixed reviews.
