Gas Mower vs. Electric Mower (cordless)

My new house is getting grass today. So I figure i'm 1 - 2 weeks away from having to mow the lawn for the first time.

Firstly, I'm gonna buy refurbished cause its way cheaper, but:-

Do I get a cordless battery powered electric mower, or a gas mower?

I live in the city so my lot is not that big. approx 40' wide and say 20' deep in the back, and 15' wide and 90' deep on the side and front (i live on a corner)

I'm leaning towards cordless because its more environmental freindly and you don't have to pull the damn thing to start it. And its maintenance free.

Another reason is one of my best freinds works at a mower place and can get me a good deal on a cordless and repair it for free (he's a tech).

What say you?

since it's cordless I'd go with that.. those electric ones you had to worry about running over the cord...

My friend just bought a cordless and likes it...

Personally I am looking for a ride-on as I will soon be moving to an acerage.

Go for the cordless. Gas mowers are too high maintainence, and trust me, runing over a cord is not fun. Extremely not fun.

I'd say gas, just make sure it has a Briggs and Stratton engine..... they're the best.

I wouldn't try mowing your new lawn so soon, I just put in new sod as well..... three weeks ago, it's starting to look real nice but the ground is still soft.... I'm going to wait a few weeks more before I mow it for the first time.

I vote for the gas powered mower, but I have never used an electric one, so I don't really have a good comparison.

Go cordless!! I owned two different ones over the last few years. They are much, much quieter (this will be your favorite feature most likely) and have plenty of power for everything you should be doing with a lawnmower.

The only complaint that I had with mine is that they are not completely maintainance free as advertised. WIth the two that I had, one the battery charger mechanism failed, the other needed a new battery pack.

They are very costly to repair, though you might be helped out with a friend in the business.

If your friend can TRULY hook you up, go cordless. Otherwise, get gas powered. Electric ones always make me think of something an old lady would use, and lets face it, nothing says MAN like a well manicured lawn. Your testosterone levels will thanks you.

I'd get an old fashioned reel type push mower. No motors, costs less, never breaks down, good excersise and you get a better cut with a reel.
Skip the cordless...they don't last very long and they have no power.

Amen man, I was just scrolling through and as I was reading I was goign to suggest that but then I saw your post at the end. Definately if you want to go enviro friendly get one of these, reel mowers are awesome. Seriously.
Other than that go gas, you buy a new one ( I know you said refurbished ) and you won't have to do any real maintenence on it for many many years (provided you change the oil once a season).

OK maybe, it's because I'm an old fuck and I hate to put into a project more work then I need to, but here's my advice. I've used all four types of mowers.
1. Old fashion push type, yes you will get a work out, but it is definately for short grass, you have to mow every week otherwise you'll get a heart attack. If you want a putting or bowling green thats the way to go.
2. Electric with cord, don't even bother no mater how careful you are you will eventualy run over the cord. Plus if you forget to mow for a few weeks it just doesn't have the power to cut deep grass well.
3. Electric cordless. This worked great until the battery wouldn't hold a decent charge any more, and the same thing applies to this type of mower as that of the mower with a cord. Don't forget to mow other wise that poor motor doesn't know what hit it.
4.gas power motor, it stinks, it's messy but I can forget to mow my lawn for a month of sundays and it with still eat down to the ground if I want it. I've had a craftsman push mower for 18 years and that motor is still starting on the first or second pull. Damn I love Sears.

Thanks for the views people.

My freind ended up GIVING me a cordless mower for free. It was one of the mowers that someone didnt want to pay to repair so abandoned it. So he fixxed it for free and gave it to me.

I do have an old fashioned push mower at our cottage, it must weigh over 100lbs, its haaard!

I feel the same way about mowers as I do about cars - as soon as they come out with an electric one that can actually get the job done, I'll buy one. So far though - no luck.

I say push mower or electric. The whole gas thing is messy. Unless you have a huge lawn, in which case get the gas (having flashbacks to summer jobs as a teen...)
