Note to file: ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer

Perhaps explaining your situation or why you're asking this question is a better way to get an answer. Otherwise, you're going to get answers that have the same amount of thought as you put into your OP.

Or you could just gird your loins when the vultures descend on the easy pickings that you've made your OP. Whichever. It doesn't matter to me, though.

In any legal sense doctors tell you.

In any normal sense you ask yourself if you have the potential to function happily.

I ask this purely for clarification: is it new policy to leave threads like this open? Used to be this thread would be locked and the OP would be asked in a PM to turn them into something discussionable.

It's always been my humble opinion that a diagnosis from a trained therapist is going to be iffy. What you are going to get as far as opinions on an Internet message board is just going to be entertaining.

It's a judgement call. Personally I left this one open because it's someone new who posted and returned for an answer so putting something that I might have put into a PM into the thread in an attempt to draw them out seemed nicer and more efficient. In my head, it's nicer to leave these things open than to shut them down, especially with newer folks. But if someone else came through and shut it down, I'm not going to shed tears.

And it's also a nice example to counter the next "nazi asshole" comment that I get.

How do you find out if you're mentally incapable?

I'll throw this out there . . .

Assume there is some problem, issue, series of happenings, or important questions that you have encountered. You need to consider them. Emotionally you are not compromised (that is, you are not so worked up and upset that you are short circuiting your thoughts and getting caught up in some loop of distressful thoughts and emotions).
You find you just can't think things through, you can't understand the underlying problems and you have zero idea how to start even framing your questions properly. You may even find in this situation that you are unaware of the problem or the question and it is an outsider who tells you there is a problem, issue, series of happenings, or important questions that you have encountered. You are completely at sea here, and you are unaware that you have no clue even when repeatedly told that you are lost.

People around you including friends, family, co-workers and casual aquaintances/passers-by offer solutions and help - but you keep running into the same problem, issue, series of happenings, or important questions that you have encountered.
They draw diagrams, suggest books, give examples, and model solutions for you but you still are completely at sea. You often forget about the problem even though it comes up several times in a short period of time. You forget the solutions or can't maneuver through them no matter how well assisted you are.

At this point I would suggest you consider the possibility that for one reason or another you are mentally incapable.

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.
"That's some catch, that Catch-22," Yossarian observed.
"It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.

Many people are mentally challenged. Most people already know they are, have seen a doctor, sought treatment, and go on living life. Those who go undiagnosed will either eventually be encouraged to seek help by family and friends or, in order to avoid the discrimination by society, have developed ways to work around their disability and to hide it. In any case, you do the best with what you have, and move on.

...i think that's a very good question, daysleeper. My suggestion would be to visit a neurologist and get a brain scan (MRI)...newest technology aids in determining mental capability.

...there are many other studies that can be done for diagnosis. For instance, if you are hypothyroid and it goes unchecked it can fog up your brain...that's just one of many examples. If your seratonin level is low it can affect your neurotransmitters.

...i find i'm more capable with adequate amounts of sleep, good diet, exercise, sunshine, and a pot of coffee

...your family doc should do a complete physical including a CBC (full bloodwork). If you want your insurance company to cover it then you'll have to get a referral first from your family physician.

BTW...some left comments above criticizing the OP...i thought the OP was perfect....the question was stated clearly and appropriately beginning "How do you...", and her feelings were expressed with an icon (don't forget that a picture is worth a thousand words)...what more does one expect?

...welcome, daysleeper...nice to meet you

Try the Mitch Hedberg roundabout test.

call a friend and ask them if they hang out with anyone thats "mentally incapable." if they say "no," then you're good.

Of what?

If you think you might be mentally incapable of something, you could try doing that something. If you find yourself unable to do it, and find that it is due to a mental limitation, you then know that you are likely to be mentally incapable of it.

Example: how do you know if you are mentally incapable of dividing 234987676234 by 987234566 mentally? First, try to do so. If you find yourself unable to, you have your answer.

This is simple. Ask yourself two questions. 1) Do I regularly watch fox news? 2) Do I believe what I hear?

If you answer yes to both of these questions then you are mentally incapable....
