point A to point B

ok beat my dead to death with this one.. but i think im right..

on a globe or sphereical surface.. the quickest way from point A to point B is a curved line right..

a straight is near impossible due to having to move material to get that straight line. moving say straight up and waiting is pointless cuz your letting the sphere move for you.. if its in motion to begin with and that is counting if the sphere is moving towards you.

am i right in this thinking..

on a sphere, the shortest line from A to B is found on the great circle that connects the two. The great circle is the "equator" of sorts of the sphere--the circle with the largest diameter on the sphere.

This is why all the airplane routes are curved and not straight. But somehow i think they say if you looked at that path in a space-time sense, the route is actually straight.

I think you guys probably just had trouble communicating on this one. The SHORTEST distance would be a straight line, but like you said, you would have to go through the object so that might not be the FASTEST. Fastest way would most likely be the curved line because although its long you wouldn’t have to move any thing.

Keep in mind the answer to the fastest path could depend on many different things. For example when you take that curved path you are in contact with the sphere the whole time, maybe friction slows this down and it would actually be faster to leave the surface of there sphere from point A, go to a new point in space (point C) and return to the sphere ant point B, forming a triangle.

I realize I just made that really complicated but the point is, without knowing everything involved you cant really say what is the "fastest path"

moving straight up and waiting is pointless... your not moving to point B in this case with a sphere in motion .. your letting the sphere do the job for you.. you just have to wait till the right moment and move down..

and if the sphere is moving the opposite way.. you would have to wait longer to get to point B do to the fact that its moving away and having to come around.. in this instance say point B is 1/3 the distance around clockwise but almost 2/3 counter clockwise.. yeah my math sucks but hopeing to get a mental picture here..
