live mouse traps

OUr house is infested. The mice are just running out in the open now but my sister is a huge animal lover and will be forever scarred if we don't use live mouse traps. Do these work? So far for us they haven't. Is there a good brand or specific type that seems to work better? Or a good kind of food to put in them? We have been using peanut butter.

As I was typing this I saw one mouse run across the room and another peek out at me form underneath this desk. They are the only friends I have. [pouts]

If you don't want your little vermin buddies to lose chunks of their bodies, do not use the sticky traps. I don't know if these are the "live traps" to which you refer.

They are a piece of cardboard with a layer of impossibly sticky clue on one side. They work great, and don't "kill" the mice by themselves. But there is no way to get a mouse off one in one piece. So after you catch a mose on one, you are faced with two options - kill the mouse yourself, or let it suffer and starve.

If you DO want to use these little miricles of science, just put them out where the mice like to run. Their running days will be over.

So you plan to rehabilitate them?

They are not your friends. They can carry nasty diseases. Get a cat. Let him do the dirty work.

Your first and possibly best option is to identify the entry points that the mice use, and seal them using an expandable foam insulation that you can get at a local hardware store.

There are traps that use some sort of humane bait-me-and-step-on-pressure-plate-door-closing method, but I have a feeling that will be a bit expensive. Also, if you let the mice out in the front yard, they will just jump back inside using whatever method they got in in the first place.

Those traps are called Havaheart traps and they work well. But they are expensive. Fortunately they are reusable, and if you block the entry points, they won't return
