What's the deal with burqas in the Middle East?

So are Islamic women suppose to wear them or what? Is there a link where I can read up on this?

I was talking to a professor about this and the discussion turned to the fact that women wear coverings from head to toe in an attempt to keep men from sinning. the reasoning is that if a man sees the flesh of a woman, he will be tempted by "impure" thoughts and be apt to commit a "sinful" act. and with that, my two cents are up...

The legend goes that Mohammed's wives were the first to wear the burqa, but apparently that's unsubstantiated.

Is it only burqas that are used to hide them?
Is it all women or only certain-aged women?
What countries or regions enforce this?
Since when was this put into effect?

Site is a bit slow but it definately has what you're looking for.
In short, the answer is there is no definitive answer, only a lot of debate among the so-called scholars.

opentocomments is right, it IS purely a social thing not a religious requirement at all. Have to say, if I was a Muslim I would definitely want to be a guy not a girl !!!
