The easiest would be the Google toolbar, which has a popup blocker and provides a excellent interface to Google.

I prefer Mozilla Firebird, where pop-up blocking is built in.

I like panicware.com's pop up stopper. Also, if the popups are coming even if your browser is closed, get the ad-aware software from lavasoft.com and clean out your spy (did I say that?) ware.

Good luck.

Sometime in early 2004 Microsoft will release a service patch to IE which may include a pop-up blocker.

best way is to install popup stopper, then download and run Spybot. Be sure to innoculate your system with Spybot, and check for updates from time to time.

I hate to pimp any program, but I've deffinately found pop up stopper to be effective and fairly user friendly. Panicware has a few nice applications available.

Try a Personal Proxy Server

The two best ones are Proxomitron (www.proxomitron.info) and Privoxy (www.privoxy.com).

Trust me. You'll never look back.

I use avant browser, which comes with a google toolbar and popup blocker, which is rather effective. Keeping your system free of spyware with Adaware or Spybot will also cut down on some of the more persistant popups, i.e. Gator, et al.

I'm looking into getting a firewall set up though.

I use my hosts file.
Tricks my computer into looking in the wrong place for websites. You can get a list of ad-only servers online and you're good to go.
I rarely get any ads or pop-ups on any sites.
I don't want to have another program running or use a toolbar, that's why I choose this style.
If anyone is interested reply and I'll dig up where I got my hosts file.

I love the Google toolbar. It's a great way to search google, and it tells you how many popups it's stopped (1364 and counting).

Thanks, Mr Mephisto. Those are excellent programs. I'm using Privoxy now.

Until that point, I had used Avant Browser's popup-blocking feature. I do use Google Toolbar, but since Avant blocked popups, I had that option turned off on Google.
