What the frickin hell is...

A best boy?

In every film credits, there appears a credit for a 'Best Boy'...

Can anyone tell exactly what the best boy's function is...

For some reason this is really irritating me...

Help me TFP!

And if you're interested to know what a gaffer is, he's the head electrician. Which has fallen out of common usage, especially on TV--they're often referred to as a Chief Lighting Technician.
