Wireless net range? I want more!

I have a setup so that I have wireless internet on my laptop coming from my cable modem at my house. It works up to 300 feet away. I want it to work farther. I work about a 1/4 mile away is that possible? Anyways i have heard that you can buy some larger antennas for the router to get more range. but still isnt enough. Let me know what you guys can think of. Thanks

actually yeah, you probably could get it to work over that distance. You'll need to build a cantenna. Here's a link to give you starter info.

build a cantenna for your house... put it on your roof and aim it at your work...

You can buy antennas that extend range or you can "make your own", as referred to in the link above.

You can also increase the transmit power in your AP, usually up to a maximum of around 100mW. You may want to check that. You can also buy more "sensitive" antennas for your client.

Finally you can buy "range extenders" that simply boost your signal strength.

There are many many options open to you. A little more info would be helpful.

What make and model AP do you have? Make and model wireless client. Environmental context (ie, where are you, inside, outside etc?).

Well, what Linksys AP?

Are you using the WAP11 or the BEFW11S4? These are the only two current Linksys .11b products.

What wireless card are you using?

The "cantenna" would not work with your router, but with your client (ie, your laptop). You would need a wireless card that supports an external antenna. You can simply buy these, without having to "make your own".
