Look toward the area where there are 3 2s. Thats probably the best area to do it. What i would pick is probably the one that is in row 4 column 5. (to the right of the 1 that is above the 1 that is above the 2)

Thats a tough one, though. I'd have to say that would be your best bet.

Edit: actually now that i think about it.. thats probably not hte best idea lol. hmm. There an answer im just not awake enough to find it.

Edit 2: But yea the area with the 2s is the place to look. The major clue is the 1 below the 3 2s.

i personally think you are at the point that a guess is as good as any. I know, I hate it when that happens too, but it occurs sometime. Although you will tend to notice trends (or what you think are trends), and I think that is similar to what the above post is explaining.

by the way, so you don't have to crop it next time, I believe it is ALT+PrintScreen (or is it Ctrl?) that will only copy the current window.. so just try that and paste it into a program and you won't need to crop.

Yea in that situation instead of stressing too much over what to pick i would just pick a random spot in the closed area hoping it would open up a large section.

Column 5 Row 1....

matthew330 07-05-2005 07:45 AM

Row 1, column 5 is a non-bomb, because Row 2 or 3 (of column 5) has to be a bomb based on the two possible scenarios of the 2's down at the bottom. Start there and see if that opens anything up.

For that matter, row 1 columns 3, and 4 are also open.

bobophil 07-05-2005 12:26 PM

top left... thats usually how its programmed to work95% chance that wont be a mine

El Pollo 07-05-2005 12:45 PM

If you look at the bottom right, where you have 1222, you can go ahead and mark the thrid from the bottom as a mine. You know that one of the first two but not not both of the first two has a mine by the 1. And since the next 2 covers 3 blocks and only one is not shared with the 1, the one that is not shared has to be a mine.
Same principle in the top left. Since the first two blocks are shared by the first two 1s, you know that the third block has to be clear, or else the second 1 would have to be a 2.
And then you can keep on going this way. Back at the bottom right where you just marked a mine, the next mine must be within the next two blocks, but it cannot be in the third block because then it would violate the 1, so you can clear the third block up from that mine.
Slowly chipping away like this will get you where you need to be. And, yes, I've spent way too much time with this game.

Safe Spaces: R1C1, R1C3, R1C4, R1C5, R4C5

Bomb spaces: R1C2, R7C5

I'll leave it to you to figure out why.

rsl12 07-07-2005 06:46 AM

or maybe I won't:

there are two possibilities:

OXOOOXOOXOXXO
OXOOOOXOOXXOX

x = bomb space, O = safe space. the notation here is that the 1st character is R1C1, 2nd is R1C2, then R1C3, R1C4, R1C5, and then we go down, so the 6th character is R2C5, then R3C5, etc etc.

Where you have two Os, that's a sure safe space. Where you have two Xs, that's a sure bomb space.

Why can't it be:

XOOX.........

The only absolutely safe place is R1C3.
The only absolutey bomb place is R8C5. (Which by further deduction makes R4C5 safe.)

Other than that, you are on your own.

El Pollo has the same answers in more detail.

rsl12 07-07-2005 09:33 AM

BonesCPA: It cannot be XOOX...I leave that as a problem for you to solve. Just try to continue the sequence and you'll see there's a problem down the line.

Ragbags 07-08-2005 06:14 AM

rsl12 is correct:
It can't be XOOX because the 2 in R4C6 is left with only one bomb to its bottom right (following the squares from R1C1 right and down: XOOXOOOXOOX...)

itch vaccine 07-11-2005 08:37 AM

omg you guys are minesweeper crazy

:)

i would just go for top right.
hahaha :) and if it booms, i'll go edit the text file in Windows folder, putting my name in at 1 second as the top score

have fun

Jinn 07-11-2005 10:10 AM

OBLAR YOU ARE MY HERO!

ALT-PRINTSCREEN! I always crop my printscreens (and I do A LOT of them)..

Oh and I think the answer is ..uhh....

XOXOOXoooXOXXOoxoxoxXOX

Blackthorn 07-11-2005 04:33 PM

Minesweeper is still around! Who KNEW??

aKula 07-11-2005 07:15 PM

One of my friends is a minesweeper freak. 20 seconds intermediate and 88 seconds expert. Here are some crazy videos he found a while ago: http://metanoodle.com/minesweeper/videos.html
some more recent ones can be found at:

mrpoopoohead 07-12-2005 01:58 AM

thanks for all the help everyone

djflish 07-12-2005 04:36 AM

In that situation I would click on the top, left corner square. If there is a long row of just ones, I usually pick the very end one. I would say that 8/10 it isn't a bomb :)

THGL 07-13-2005 04:48 AM

So what was the outcome?

I think it's neat when a time-waster like Minesweeper ends up taxing your brain like that.

I don't remember the name of it, but someone made a version of Minesweeper for the Mac where you could set the board at 9999x9999 (or something insanely close to that). There was even a Map window so you could tell where on the board you were.

Ah, crap. Who wants to guess?

meepa 07-15-2005 10:44 PM

Well the 2 in the corner obviously needs two mines next to it. It is flanked across the aisle by 1s in each direction. But clearly you can't put the two mines next to each other, or you'd be doubling up on the 1s. Thus the only way is a mine above and to the right of the 2 in the corner.

12X
XO3
2X1

If you did

12X
XX3
2O1

Then the 1 on top will explode.

12X
OX3
2X1

This has the same problem with the 1 on the right

No guesses required!

Rawb 07-20-2005 03:25 PM

Just so you know, you can cheat at minesweeper.

Incase you really want to impress your friends in some cheezy little way, here is how to do it:

With your cursor in the minesweeper window, type XYZZY (I can't remember if it needs all caps or not...), then press Shift+Enter, and then Enter.

If you did it correctly, a _SINGLE_ pixel in the top left corner of your screen will appear, and it will be white on a not-mine, and black on a mine.

itch vaccine 07-23-2005 09:00 AM

Yeah right Rawb :P

aKula 07-23-2005 02:19 PM

Nah that cheat actually works in windows XP. Using it you can peform 'magic' by flagging all the mines without even opening a single square.

optik_nerve 07-24-2005 08:39 PM

I've never understood the concept of Minesweeper. I just went for it.

pattycakes 07-29-2005 09:46 PM

i never could figure out this fin game

Slavakion 07-30-2005 05:48 AM

The cheat is xyzzy (no caps necessary) and shift. The pixel will appear on top of whatever window/desktop is currently in the background. The game actually lets you record high scores with this.
