Photos - Painted Desert, Arizona

To get from the South rim or the Grand Canyon to the North Rim, I had to cross part of the Painted Desert which has quite a few interesting rock formations.

I was on the road about 5:00AM and happened to spot this rock formation just as it was lit up by the sunrise.

Northern Arizona is mostly parks, forests and Indian reservations that were very sparsely settled. The driving was mostly thru open landscape with rock formations like this, near Vermillion Cliffs

The landscape looks like this a little closer to Vermillion Cliffs

That picture blows my mind.

Great set, you make me want to go out there to see the area.

Your travels are doing a great job of making me homesick, dogzilla - glad to see others who are able to find the beauty in this empty land.

Thanks. I spent more hours on the road than I thought I was going to. When I crossed northern Arizona, it was a lot of open space, but was never boring. There was usually some interesting scenery along the way that kept me from being bored, and I could have easily added another day or two to the trip if I stopped and looked around at each of the interesting places I saw. I see now why there's a magazine called Arizona Highways.
