Politics and Pets: Dog vs. Cat again

I'm curious about this one. I wonder if political inclinations have some relationship to animal preference.

I predict that "cat folks" are mostly politically "liberal" and that "dog folks" are closer to 50% of each ... let's see ...

Willravel 10-18-2006 09:09 PM

I'm liberal, and I'm 1000% dog person through and through. People confuse cat's indivuduality for intelect. It's the opposite of dogs, as they are intelligent and loyal.

In my experience.

Ch'i 10-18-2006 09:34 PM

Liberal dog person, explicitly.

Telluride 10-18-2006 09:41 PM

I'm totally a cat person and definitely not a liberal. I think I would be considered a conservative-leaning/moderate Libertarian but, for the purpose of the poll, I voted as "politically conservative".

Owning a dog is like having a little kid that never grows up. It might be kind of cute for a while, but eventually it can become very annoying.

jorgelito 10-19-2006 12:09 AM

Dog person: Socially conservative, fiscally liberal.

I agree with Will about cats.

aKula 10-19-2006 03:21 AM

I'm a cat person and liberal if using the broad definition of liberal endemic to the USA i.e. to the left on the political spectrum.

aberkok 10-19-2006 03:57 AM

I can't do this liberal or conservative thing anymore. It's not a useful label to me. If it helps explain me, however, I will say this: I'm definitely a cat person who is open minded and willing to consider change. I am also anti-capital, anti-war and all for love and peace.

JustJess 10-19-2006 05:20 AM

I love all animals, and currently have cats (it's mean to have dogs in an apartment with our schedules!).

I guess you'd consider me a Libertarian, of sorts... fiscally slightly conservative and socially very liberal. So I don't fit. And I don't want to fit. So there!

Charlatan 10-19-2006 05:25 AM

I love my dog and my cat (though if pressed I would say my cat edges out my dog... just don't tell the dog).

I would consider myself a centrist (despite what others might think).

mixedmedia 10-19-2006 05:41 AM

Dog person - liberal

(although I actually live with two cats now - they belong to my daughters...which is also indicative of my tolerance for many (not all!) conservative viewpoints as I happen to be dating a republican :p )

Lady Sage 10-19-2006 05:46 AM

Well now this all depends on the general definitions of liberal and conservative... without seeing what is considered of both I can not properly vote on the above poll...

Carno 10-19-2006 07:07 AM

I'm a dog person, but I didn't vote because the terms "liberal" and "conservative" are offensive to me.

Grasshopper Green 10-20-2006 04:08 PM

I'm more of a cat person than a dog person, and I'd consider myself more "liberal" than "conservative", although I'm a mix of both.

Gilda 10-20-2006 04:32 PM

One of our cats is liberal and the other is a social liberal, conservative on foreign policy, and a moderate on economic policy.

^^^ :D

Both of my dogs support a social welfare system, with no demands upon return to work requirements. Lazy bastages.

mixedmedia 10-21-2006 03:18 AM

Our cats are monarchists.

thingstodo 10-21-2006 12:18 PM

Dog person. Middle of the road. Live and let live or decide for themselves!

Actually, I think pretty much all politicians suck and are only in it to get re-elected, but I guess that's for the politics forum. But you started it!!

longbough 10-23-2006 12:13 AM

Wow. So far it looks like roughly an even spread. No gross trends are apparent.
I'd say it seems that dog/cat favoritism may be independent of politics ... what a wonderful thing!

.... so there's hope after all ...

:D

Dog person. Liberal.

My wife is more of a cat person and is conservative (don't worry she's coming around though) :)

I'm a little confused about this statement:

I would think it's the opposite. My dog is trained. He does what he's supposed to.. much like a child does as they get older. A cat.. does whatever it wants. So, I'll agree with willravel, individuality != intellect.

That interpretation can only come from a cat person. I know because I used to be one.

I'm mostly dog-person now (about 80%).

And, on the contrary, I think it's cat's that are like kids that never grow up... only because they tend to be more introspective and narcissistic as children tend to be.

My dog is more proactive and looks out for my personal safety and for the security of the household. If there's a sign of danger he places himself between me and harm's way. In the face of danger most cats I know will be the first to disappear ... owner be damned.

vermin 11-16-2006 11:52 AM

Pet preference: Cat
Politically: Himmler was soft on crime.

Willravel 11-16-2006 12:05 PM

It's now looking like liberals are more often dog people, drawing from the TFP pool of opinion.
