Check bathroom stalls, pieces of paper flying around on the street, underneath bridges, inside phone booths, yearbooks from 1950-2004, random samplings from strangers, call-in radio shows, desks in classrooms, anyone with numbers in pen written on their hands and finally I think stopping traffic in the middle of Chicago shooting a gun in the air saying, "Does anyone have Amy's phone number!?!?!" would at least get your message out there...

Do your reasons for needing the number involve a gun, a plastic tarp, hacksaw, and a shovel?

If not, I suggest the online whitepages as well.

Considered Directory Assistance? (your area code)-555-1212. They can even connect you for an extra 50 cents.

Is her name, "Marie?" Does she live in Memphis, Tennessee? Did your uncle take the message and write it on the wall? Did her mother tear apart your happy home?

what do you know about the person? in college? try their website. know where they work? check there for at least a work number. search for their name on google. search for any high school teams they participated in on google.

does the person run a website? do you have an email address? sometimes an ISP will release a name, but it's doubtful. if you've ever recieved an email you can get the person's IP address (assuming it wasn't a dial-up connection), that's when you try an nmap and see if there's any open ports. there's like a .0001% chance they're running a finger server, but eh. maybe you could do some artful password guessing and get access to the person's computer and see if they've got an addressbook stored somewhere, but at that point, why not just create a file on the desktop named "read me" and type your message in there?

anyhow, if you can at least get a personal website you can learn some information that will narrow your search down. For example, if you were looking for a girl named Julie Smith's phone number and she's a minor, you're in trouble since she probably doesn't have a number in her own name, and her last name is smith. but by checking on her website you notice she has a sister named Sarah and her mom and dad's names are Frank and Kathy, you can look in the phonebook for a Frank Smith. Some phonebooks also list extra phone lines the person has. so if Frank Smith has 2 teen-lines listed as J. Smith and S. Smith, you're home free. wouldn't have learned that without the website.

so, how badly do you need to contact that person?
