when I'm preparing for competition I usually do 3 sets of 3 reps at a weight that is heavy enough to make me not be able to finish the last set and use a spotter. I do this twice a week (monday and thursday) for 2 weeks before. Also if this competition is on a Saturday, then I would do an easier 3 x 3 workout on Monday and not bench again until the competition to make sure your muscles are completely rested. Also, if your body weight isnt an issue, then I would drink a protein shake right after each workout. This advice has no professional or knowledgable background, its just what I do when I need to prep for competition.

Whenever I hit a plateau, I throw in something different. Usually doing my max for 3 sets of 2's with some help from my spotter will do it for me. If I want to raise my bench max, I'll do a blitz which is benchpress only with my regular workout weight but do twice as many sets over a longer period of time. I wouldn't do any other chest exercises with that though. It'll shock your muscles hardcore.

To add mass to your chest you need to lift a high weight using low reps. I'm not sure how to help you increase your weight, that is pretty much determined by how strong your chest is and how quickly it develops. I read an article the other month about a chest press shirt. It was made out of this tough rubbery type material and it was so tight it took 3 people to strech it and put it on. This kinds works like a weight belt but I wouldn't recommend it for the average guy.

high weight low reps. bench press is a compound exercise so dont forget your shoulders and back. most important is nutrition and rest though. if your competition is for powerlifting head of to bodybuilding.com and check out their powerlifting forum. i know these guys use a different technique then plain bodybuilders.

Jeez. You guys missed some of the most obvious tips.
The bench press, while working your chest, also does a number on your triceps and shoulders. Best way to increase bench press? Make sure you're working your triceps, and shoulders, regularly.
