Sister-in-law... porn... help!
 

My computer-savvy sis-in-law is coming to stay with me & my wife for a couple weeks and will be sleeping in the computer room. She'll probably be using the computer for email, etc. I'm wondering if she'd ask herself "Hey, I wonder what's in his Kazaa folder?" and take a peek. Or do a search for clips to see what's there.

I've got ALOT, too many to burn and probably not worth the effort. Think I should just delete everything (including bookmarks) and make it a fun thing to start from scratch in search of quality porn?

just make some really obscure directory buried within about 15 subdirectories in your c: drive and transfer everything there temporarily. Also, change the ending from .jpg or whatnot to .doc or .tmp or whatnot so they don't show up in a search.

Unless she really digs deep they won't find them.

Very simple. Put all your porn into one folder. Right click and go to the general tab. There should something that says "attributes". Select "hidden" and viola! now put that into another folder and while in the second folder where the hidden one will remain, go up to folder options and select view. Scroll down to "hidden files and folders" and select "do not show..." Just remember the host folder and when she's gone, go back into folder options and select "show hidden files and folders." Now this is all assuiming you are using a PC on a Windows platform....

Couldn't you just save that specific bookmark folder onto a floppy disk or upload those bookmarks to a temporary Yahoo account. After moving to the appropriate place, delete the existing bookmark folder, and reload them once your sister-in-law has left your residence.

The FIRST thing I do when sitting down to a computer in a forensic capacity is to make all files visable. This would work if she were a computer peasant, but as stated she is computer savvy. I would move all files to a directory, and encrypt the entire ball of wax using PGP or any other high encryption utility. Make sure you copy your shortcuts there first as well. You shouldn't lose a single bit, and it will take a bank of Crays months to unencrypt your stash. After she leaves, decrypy and keep posting.

While this would definitely work, I would personally feel comfortable enough with just hidden files knowing that my *sister-in-law* was the one I was hiding them from. I mean come on, if you think someone's going to go that far to find out your secrets, why would you give them a bed in your home? Just seems kind of weird to me. If this is still the case, go ahead and do some encryption research ;)

Hehe. Now that's going a bit far in this case. She's computer-savvy enough to do a quick search if bored one day but she's not gonna go as far as you would. :D

which operating system are you running? if it is win2k or newer you should make a new user account and restrict its access so that it cannot open the porn folder

PGP is a great program - but you are not up against the Kremlin here. It is a relative. Just a password protected Winzip of the folders should do the trick.

On the other hand, you could just leave it and let the world know you like the way that women look naked. Then you don't have to hide anything anymore.

Put it in a RAR or ZIP file, and add a password. Change the extension to .tmp . Done.

In regards to the "how can I rename many files at once?" question.

Go to a DOS prompt. Get to the folder. If you do not know how to do that, use the "CD" command. For example, to get to C:\temp:

CD c:\temp

Then just type

ren *.mpg *.tmp

Reverse when she leaves.

Of course, if she's REALLY computer savvy, she'll know that large files are probably porn video. So you'll have to do better than that. I would zip them all up, use a password, and then rename the file to "work.db". She'll go nuts trying to open it with Access.

My GF's brother did that but you can still open the zipped file & view the filenames. So I can see a file called "16yearoldfuckingahorse.jpg" but you cant open it. So if he did that hed be busted, wouldnt he??

Thanks for all the concern people. I definitely see that this is the place to get good answers if needed, but all I did was hide the folder and it's fine. In this case, the rest is just overkill but noted for future use if needed. :p

As far as my wife knowing... not really. I mean I'm sure she knows that porn is oogled but doubt she realizes the volume of it. :D

Pick up a new hard drive really cheap, and copy all the files to that HD and just remove it (or unplug) when your sister comes. Now u have safe porno storage and space for alot more

It's just porn. If you slap it into a file all by itself and stash it somewhere on the drive only you know about, it should suffice.

Uninstall all your media players or make it so no program reads image or mpegs. Anyways it doesnt matter, she already knows EverythinG about you. If your wife knows about the porn then she does too.

That way, if a 'computer-savvy" person finds it, they'll just think it was a memory dump from a system crash. Worst case scenario is that they'll think they're doing you a favor by deleting it. But you already listed that as a viable option, right?

That "hidden" folder thing won't work at all. If you're using Windows XP, when doing a search, you can choose "search hidden files and folders." This will yield results including the files in your hidden folder. The only way to protect it from her is to set up some kind of folder password like mentioned above, or change the file extensions temporarily. The WinZip thing sounds like a good idea, but I've never tried it.

well, if you dont know how to create a limited user account, just create 10 or 20 zip files and get everything in there, password protected. name them something like "windows backup files" or "programming class junk."

Well, the easiest way to ensure that the steps you take are effective will be similar to what Platypus suggested. Let your wife know a couple of days ahead of time that your computer is 'having problems'. Before you leave every day go to the back of your computer and switch the Power Supply from 110 to 220. It won't damage anything in the computer, but it won't boot at all. When you get home you get to be the hero by 'fiddling with it' till it works again.

Change the name of your porn folder to: *wifes name*'s stuff. Poof, no more problem, even if she finds it.

If you don't want to do that just encrypt the folder and put a password on it. Then erase your internet cache and clear your history. Plus get rid of the recent files list on whatever media viewer you use.

you can also use a program called "Magic Folders". Search for it on Tucows or something. Simple program to hide prying eyes.

What OS? Create a new user profile with minimum freedom so that she can run a browser and that's about it. :P

Even if you password protect your zip archive, it can still be opened and show filenames, while not allowing actual viewing of the files. Simply zip everything, change the extension, and encrypt it.

When we went about hiding our porn, we moved everything about a dozen folders deep in a gaming folder. This was after trying to make the limited user account, you could still search for everything on the regular one. I probably just did it wrong, but moving everything really wasn't a hassle, and our porn is actually still there *smirks*

the easiest thing is to zip everything up, password the zip, and rename the single .zip file to some random extension. no one will ever find it.

Sorry I got in on this late. Try this next time. Get a program called Hide Folders. Its available here

It's free for the demo version and is fully functional with minor limitations. Put all your stuff in a folder and hide them using this program. Copy the program files to a floppy disk and delete it from your hard drive. The folder with your stuff in it is totally invisible-even to searches. Without the host program they can't be made visible. After your sister-in-law leaves copy it back to your hard drive and un-hide your folders.

I downloaded a shareware game (starcraft) and every time i download porn i change file name to sumthin like file982.jpg and put it in Starcraft shareware and no one is the wiser if any one asks just say it is a cinimatic for the game. And if they find it they must be looking.

I've got about 90 GB of porn stuff, mostly websites.
I've got two 120 GB drives, when I know somebody is going to be on my computer when 'I'm not there, I just unplug the porn HD! :)

Don't forget Internet Explorer...

A) Nuke the History and Temporary Internet Files.
B) Use the registry to ensure that your media players (Windows Media Player especially) doesn't reveal the last few "videos" you've watched. If you don't know how, just bring up a couple videos in WMP to gloss over the recent file list.
C) Relocate your porn, shove it into a zip folder, PW protect it, and rename it to "wouldntyouliketoknow.zip", just to mess with her.
D) Double check your recent documents list. Open up a bunch of boring stuff to make sure it's clear.
E) Do a quick search for *.jpg and *.mpg on your PC to make sure you don't have any loose files lying around.
F) Copy your Favorite's folder to a new directory, and modify the old one to your needs. Once she's gone, copy the Favorites folder back so your links are fine.

Yes, she did find the stash while her & my wife were doing something on the computer. I was out for the day but when I got home, the 2 of them had their tops off and were making out while watching some video clip. They asked me why I took so long to come home and yada yada yada...

Then I woke up. :D

She left yesterday and I doubt she found anything. Well if she did, she didn't say anything about it. A part of me is hoping she did see it, she's very hot and 21. Hehe.

1. get FileProtector. Its freeware, and its pretty good. you should be able to FTP it from somewhere. If she trips the folder she'll know you've got something to hide, though.

2. If you run XP, just create a user account for her and dump all your porn in YOUR My Documents folder. That should be secure enough for your purposes.

NOTE:
I would not suggest just hiding your files. A *.jpeg search can expose you pretty quickly, even if your pics are hidden. If she suspects you might have porn on your PC, she might throw that out there. I do it on ANY personal PC I can get my grubby hands on just to see the habits of the owner. I've been quite surprised a few times when I found people who aren't as innocent a they apppear.

If the thinking is that she will not only glance through his files, but will do so in a "forensic capacity," then it's time to lock the computer down, password access only, and don't give her the password.

I would just do as mentioned, put a password on the account and keep a visitor out completely. Make sure the "administrator" account has one too, or someone will have a back door. Even if you have the XP welcome screen, you can get in via safe mode to the admin account if it has no password or a known one.

The other alternative is to save all porn etc in your profile folder (my documents is a good one) and give the visitor a plain user account. They will have no access to your stash.

Yes, I read the whole thread, but porn on the internal HD is so 1990's. 500gb externals are cheap, and if you're worried about them being found, truecrypt the whole thing to boot.

Just make a guest login with no access to your porn folders and password your regular account.

Login as the guest during the duration of her stay.


It won't stop someone who is computer savvy from booting from a disk, etc. but it will stop family members who are not going to no-shit hack your computer in order to see whether you have porn.

I'd just say put the porn, bookmark folder and all, into a password protected Zip folder and hide that in Windows' icon folder or something.

And I caught the date thing by the short replies and many unfamiliar avatars... and as I was coming into the thread, I had this suspicion that the thread was about a male friend who had just found out his wife's sister had gone into the adult entertainment industry.

I was sorry to find out that it was not this scenario, and that it was yet another unarchived thread; glad to see it wasn't the TheJazz who dug it up, though.

At the time of the first post I used to hide my files (not all were porn) on a linux account called froot :) and I was the only one to have that password, Dual boot even back then FTW.

Now when I leave my computer I take my keys which includes a usb fob. As soon as that fob is removed a few directories become encrypted, put the fob back still no joy till you enter 2 passwords. All files in those directories decrypt/encrypt on the fly, I barely even notice the lag except on largish files. A buddy of mine wrote the program so I know it has no backdoors.

There is a member here whose wife works with the sister of Sasha Grey. I'm not sure he's ever mentioned it here, I know about it from an off-site conversation.
