I've been told by folks that I saw up there last July when I stayed several days in Friday Harbor, that the diving was great. I didn't try it, tho, as if the water isn't 80 + degrees, I get cranky (color me spoiled).

Probably too late to help you but tropicdiver is right. My son went to the University of Washington in Seattle, is a diver, and he wouldn't even do it. If you haven't already gone try sking, or snowboarding, still cold, but you're wrapped up.

Second the cold water notion- with the above water temperatures not garaunteed to bring some warmth, you're gonna be mighty chilly- When I was up on the Puget Sound and San Jaun island area in March, I was chilly with jeans, sweater, and a jacket on.

I've dove near the San Juans (BC's Gulf islands) and the water's not so bad. You just dress accordingly...wet suit, dry suit, hood, gloves etc.
The best diving is during winter if you want clear water. Make sure you bring a bright-ass light with you because you lose all colours at depth. Diving at slack tide after an ebb tide is best. We dove on several sunken ships that were purposely sunk just for divers, there may be some in the San Juans, but I don't really know. It's defiantly not tropical water with tropical clarity, but it's worth checking out.

I sailed there twice with the Boy Scouts. It's beautiful! I'm not sure about scuba so I can't help you there. However make sure you swing by Friday Harbor, and if you remember, ask people about the local masoleum that's a short walk outside of town. It's pretty interesting
Enjoy yourself -T
