Metal Detectors?

I've been thinking about getting a metal detector for sometime, I think it would be an interesting hobby. But I know very little about them, so, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with the basics, where to buy them, what not to buy, what to buy, etc.

Thanks!

The radioshack one I bought a few years ago never did work. I guess you get what you pay for, it only cost 50 bucks.

All depends on how you're gonna use it and what $ you're willing to part with. You can go the cheap route (Radio shack and other no name brands) but you'll be spending a lot of time digging trying to uncover all the false hits they give. Better quality units are able to distinguish targets a bit better and can be adjusted to compensate for various conditions and items you're looking for.

I have a White's Surf Pro that I got for underwater searching while scuba diving. I'm pretty happy with it.

I'm hoping for the 2-300 dollar range. I don't want to spend to much more than that. This will be used for family stuff, just poking about the country side etc, but, we still want a quality unit. I've been looking around, but i'm still not sure what brands are the best, and which ones to avoid. The ones I were looking at were the "bounty hunter" brand. This one, in perticular http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...results1.jhtml

I did it a bit when I was a kid.

Problem is the US is to young to have a lot of cool burried stuff.

Europe has a good 3000 years worth of discarded metal, lucky bastards
