Has anyone read that article in Time, called "Twixters". I think that article explains alot. It refers to our generation being one who is moving from job to job and trying to settle down but we just don't know what we want. I know I feel this way. When I graduated college in dec. of '03 I worked an insurance job for awhile, than a collections job at a big mortgage company and now I work as a teller at a big credit union. But I'm still not completely happy, I feel like I have more to contribute to this world but I don't yet know what that is.

Bullshit! Complete bullshit. No one can be beaten. You're only beaten if you think you are.
You're only beaten if you think you are? No man, sometimes a person's just got to face facts and accept what you've got. Not everybody can be happy like you.

I also plan to start a business once I'm done with my second degree.
2nd degree? Sounds like you're a smart guy. It also sounds like you're intelligent, motivated and rich. I don't have those things, lots of people don't have those things. Why do you feel the need to make us feel worse off than we already are? Lecturing a midget that he's feeling sorry for himself isn't going to make him any taller, and lecturing me that I chose to be a failure because I'm not trying hard enough isn't going to make me a success.

Make a decision, either shit or get off the fucking pot. If you want to change your life then just make the decision and do it!
I've made the decision, I "got off the fucking pot." I'm not trying to hold anybody else up. If you think you've got what it takes to be a rocket scientist, then by all means, go for it. If, however, you recognize that you're not really very smart, you're kind of ugly, anti-social, without money or resources, then maybe you're better off taking that crappy job and eeking out some pleasure from alcohol than wasting your life in a vain and futile attempt to be an astronaut.

I'm sorry if my life experience has offended you. Maybe you're right, that it's my own fault because I didn't try hard enough. This will be my last post in this topic.

Is being mature talking about how one doesn't want to try for success because it might interrupt one's porn and drinking schedule and then whining about it?
I never claimed I was mature, I was just being honest about my life. Just because my attempts at pain relief aren't as thrilling as your own is no reason to belittle them.

Master Shake, I was directing the last comment toward gondath, since he seemed to think you were mature; whereas, he figured I must be immature.

Also, my whole point in this is that, whereas you cannot do anything you want, being positive on the whole is better than negatively assuring somewhere that even if they try, they'll never get anywhere.

Ok I'll accept that. Some people are just happy the way they are. I just don't like seeing people sell themselves short if they're capable of much more.

I make less than 30K per year. I don't have a rich daddy or a trust fund. I just bought my first home. Everything I have I literally busted my ass for years to get. BUT, what I lack in $$$ I make up for with learning everything I can and a huge amount of motivation.

To each his own.

I'll change to the opposite direction here and say try for anything you want to do and put everything behind it. Just don't take such huge leaps that falling short would leave you broke or hopeless. I still stand behind everything I said about people not having equal opportunities though. That's applies to everywhere in the world. It's just life. Believing otherwise is what I like to refer to as the American mythology. The world cannot support, in it's current capitalistic mindset, everyone becoming rich and having wildly successful jobs. That's not how capitalism works, folks. It's designed around having a a few people have most of the resources. You may support that idea or not, but I fail to see how any sane person could argue that it's not true.

I think the hard reality is that anything can become monotonous. You can become numb to anything if you do it often enough. Soldiers get numb to killing, firefighters get numb to always saving people and putting out fires, etc. It won't matter how exiciting or important the job is. Eventually, some boredom will set it. The problem arises when you feel like that all the time. You should be getting some kind of satisfaction from your job. Play around with options. Try learning about about different occupations. See if any hobbies you have would make good jobs. Career hunting is not an exact science. I still don't know for sure if I'm pursuing the right job, but time will tell. I can always go back to school and train for something else.

Spritebox,

You are young. Things will not always be this way. What you want to do for a living will come to you over time. Don't force it. Until that time comes, don't concentrate on how monotonous it will be. Try to have some fun.

Wow, this thread was depressing. Thanks to those who gave advice and to those who made the thread a bit cheerier.

Also, Master_Shake, I hope you can be happy someday.

La petite moi, I like your attitude. I wish I had that kind of work ethic.
